Hey all,

Did anyone here ever watch the show firefly or the corresponding movie called Serenity? How exactly was there only 1 season of this legendary show? There are freaking conventions for this show and it was only on for one season!!! Great call on that one fox....NOT.

I remember watching it in high school and being blown away by it. I never really was into space sci fi shows much till I saw it and it changed my whole perspective on the genre. I started playing on Eve because someone else mentioned in the forums of an unrelated game that Eve Online reminded them of firefly. I thought, "Wow! I've got to check that out!"

Anyone elses thoughts on the matter?

Fox had the show doomed before it even had a chance. For starters, the first show episode they aired was Train Job. That's right, they didn't even start with Serenity so we were lost on character relations and the plot in general. And to make sure it would die quickly, they chose to air it Sunday Late Night (more like Monday morning at midnight) when nobody was awake to watch it. Then they proceeded to claim it wasn't getting any ratings and cancelled it before we were even half way through the season. Nathan Fillion noted that The Message was the episode where they learned that Firefly wouldn't last which made the funeral scene rather symbolic for the cast and crew.

But yes, the show grew to cult status. But regardless of all of the petitions and the ever growing fanbase, Fox refuses to give up the rights to the show. We tried getting them to sell the rights to Sci-fi (now known as Syfy the wrestling network). Private organizations, including Nathan, have also tried to buy the rights so they could continue the series online. Fox knows that they bungled this show, but they're too embarrassed to bring it back and they refuse to let some other company turn it into a success.

Our cries for the show did get us one victory in the form of the movie which has made Firefly the shortest lived series to make it to the big screen. All the movie did though was make us even more passionate about the show.

You'll have to forgive the long post. We all enjoy certain shows but Firefly never gets old for me and I have held a grudge after all these years for what Fox did to them. I hope that people never give up fighting for those rights. And as a fellow Browncoat all I have to say is some day we'll rise again.

Yeah, Sci-fi might have given it the run it deserved. I think if Stargate SG-1 had like 10 or so seasons and even a couple spin offs, then firefly should have at least had half that run time. Now don't get me wrong, I liked Stargate SG-1 but man...so many seasons of walking into a gate. :)

Only reason I posted this was because I saw firefly in netflix and remembered what a great show it was. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic so you know what? I'm going to go on a firefly marathon today and tomorrow on netflix.

I love Firefly but I'd rather not see SyFy turn it into one of their ridiculous soap operas.

I've had the box set and movie for years now and still watch them often.

It actually came up during a conversation the other day and I was asked which episode is my favorite. Each time somebody asks me that I go into brain lock. I am completely incapable of choosing one episode.

The only thing Fox can do even halfway-right is sports, and hockey was NOT among them.

We are not going to die. We can't die. You know why? Because we are so _very_ pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die. Huh? Look at that chiseled jaw. Huh? Come on.

Basically, the pilot episode (the Train Job) started off too slowly for FOX; they wanted lots of action, right off the bat, but Whedon is better at developing complex characters over longer periods of time. They also had complaints about Mal -- FOX execs said that he was too grim, and that he should be more 'jolly' (personally, I liked the 'edgy' Mal a bit more than the 'happy doofus' Mal).

Joss is very, very good at presenting a show that makes us think; his heroes are never outright 'perfect' and his villains aren't always what they appear (Witness 'Dr. Horrible', where the roles are reversed -- the villain is the kind-hearted sympathetic one, and the hero is the needlessly-violent jerk).

Unfortunately, FOX being what it is, they don't generally want 'thinking' shows. They want boom, bang, angst and drama, all of which is packaged in a way that draws in the viewer. So, they requested the new pilot, with lots of explosions and guns and rousing speeches and crashing aircraft.

If you watch carefully, you can see the way the tone changed between the pilot and Train Job -- the pilot is very dark visually and very grim, while the Train Job (Whedon's original pilot script) is much lighter, both visually and in dramatic tone, which also highlights the difference in philosophy between Whedon and FOX.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....
