Can someone clarify [b][i]EXACTLY[i][b] what went wrong?

I was doing the mission 'Glue' (it was an advanced combat training mission). I lost my destroyer, and several Tech II modules. I know, I am an idiot and I did something horribly wrong, I want to know exactly what went wrong.

Now before you ask why I was in a tutorial mission, I was offline for over 9 months and was trying to get back into the game.

Ship lost: Coercer (destroyer)
Enemies (unknown faction): 1x Terrorist Leader (didn't recognize the ship), 2x Terrorist Trainee (Ketrals)
Mission Level: Career Advancement (advanced tutorials)

Fitting:
8x Gatling Pulse Laser II
8x Conflaguration S
1x Afterburner II
1x Armor Repairer II
1x Beta Reactor Control: Capacitor Power Relay I
1x Damage Control II
1x Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane

Assets in Cargobay:
8x Scorch S
7x Imperial Navy S
4x Extruded Heat Sink I

The mission gave me a destroyer when I accepted, so I went back to Amarr and picked up my fully fit destroyer. The mission also told me to tank, so I put on my modules mentioned in the medium slot. The tutorial window also told me to use my afterburner.

Unfortunately, that DIDN'T help since I was being both Warp Scrambled AND Webbed! I wasn't expecting the enemies to be so tough, and so I assumed I would beat them before I lost capacitor. I had to use my Afterburner just to counteract the Webbing, but it didn't help very much, and it caused me to lose capacitor even faster.

When they finally got into my armor, I didn't even have enough capacitor to switch on my Armor Repairer. Also, my Damage Control modules didn't help in the slightest.

The reason behind the fit was because I was in a Corporation that was going to teach me how to PvP, and apparently they thohgt it would be a good idea to just DPS Tank in a Destroyer Fleet. And the problem was NONE of them would respond to my calls for help! Now look what happened. I lost my ship and then the game crashed on me just as I entered my capsule!

Also, I tried using the stupid mission reports website, and they don't have anything for the tutorial missions.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Maybe you got too close to the concord agents.

That mission descriptions says that you have to use the provided stasis webifier to web the pirate for concord to destroy. The coercer that you used only has 1 mid which you used for the recommended afterburner, but it meant that you went into the mission unable to complete it.

I recommend trying again with a destroyer that allows you to fit both a web and an afterburner, and make sure you read the mission description fully in future.

OP, been a very long time since I did new player misisons and I don't remember this one. But, either cross train another destroyer as suggested above, or fit up a punisher. Better tank on a punisher. Of course this only points out the idiocy of having designed a one mid slot destroyer. The one mid slot assault frig will be no more in a few hours \o/

Glue also *suggests* you use an AB for the mission, you don't NEED one like you do the Web it provides you with.

I was doing "the exam", not 'glue'

A Coercer should be able to just rip through mission NPCs, and there could have been a number of things that went wrong, but...

Mind the range on that. In fact, I'm betting that that is why you got killed. That is literally the shortest range setup you could have on a Coercer: Gatling Pulse Lasers are the shortest range lasers, and Conflagration is the shortest range (and poorest tracking) variety of crystals.

At max skills, that gets you an optimal range of 4.5 km with a falloff range of 0.63 km. This essentially means that if anything is at anything slightly over 5 km, you will never hit them. If the NPCs orbited you at, say, 6 km while scramming and webbing you, you were boned from the start.

I noticed you had Scorch and some other type of crystal in your cargohold. Lasers get range flexibility out of very easy switching from one crystal to another. Had you swapped to Scorch, you would have had 13.5 km optimal range (at max skills; yours would probably be something more like 10 km).

There is also a whole rainbow (literally) of different T1 (and faction) crystals that you can use at all sorts of ranges. If you are curious, there is more info on optimal/falloff range at my blog here, and on why not to mix ammo types (which becomes a temptation in these situations) here.

Managing range is important especially for lasers, as they have very low falloff -- which means that if a target is even slightly outside your range, you won't even do partial damage.

In short: use lasers/crystals appropriate for the engagement. Good luck!
