So now I'm getting into high gear. But where am I going?

Well, I have been in the game for a bit, and just recently hit my first goal.
I can fly a hulk -- yay! Roll
But what now?
I'm not quite sure where to go from here.
I don't enjoy mission running, and I *really* do (brace for it) enjoy mining.
I have no desire to maximize ISK/hour, it's a fun casual experience for me.

However-- HiSec mining does get cushy and lame. So I think I'd like to be able to mine in low/nullsec, about 30% of the time.

Can anyone suggest me some good fittings for what I've described?
And maybe a relaxed Corp friendly to a casual miner with family priorities?

I am considering having two hulks (or another ship), one fitted for mining, and one for a bit more adventure.

ANYWAY, I feel like I'm losing my train of thought, so I'll leave it there!

I have about 800 million ISK to spend.

IF you actually like mining, and have two characters you can run at the same time - make one an Orca/Hulk pilot and the other a Hulk pilot. Then you can boost you mining operations as well as haul your mined stuff easily. An Orca constantly boosting 1 Hulk might be overkill (IIRC if you have 2 or 3 then definately field the Orca) else run 2 Hulks and haul with Orca from time to time.

Anyway, you probably would want to

  • Find a very quiet corner of low sec or even null for your mining endeavours; or
  • Find an industrial corp that is active in low sec, wormhole space or null

To find a corp, go visit the recruitment forums over there =>
I'd rather go for the second option to be honest. Less stressfull with friends around in those environments.

if you like mining, consider joining null sec corp with industrial wing. That way you wil have friend to play with and also a higher goal then just making isk.

definitely join a corp. They'll be able to help you avoid the pitfalls of being a newbie, and most likely help give you other goals that you didn't necessarily think about.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

join a null sec corp that does industry (there are a few)

Max out shield skills

Realise that mining's actually rather dull,
Traing numerous pvp\gunnery skills
vex over the 4mil you have in industry and the 4mil you have in science

that's what I did :D

Hold onto that ISK. You will have to replace your Hulk fairly quickly.

Null sec mining is less dull and boring (you always have to be alert to local and surrounding systems) and make quite decent IKS (both known from own experience) but in null you can't only be a miner.

Even miners must be able to PvP, as without defense you don't own space, means you don't have space to mine in. So expect any null-sec corp to say to you that you need some PvP skills (not as much as hardcore pvp guys, but they want everybody to be able to help out if needed).

Maybe get a Skiff for low sec adventures

Not many people realize the skiff has a little role bonus that gives it a built in warp core stab.

If you mine mercoxit with it then your yield will still be decent even though you only have one strip miner cause of the 60% bonus to Mercoxit Mining Crystal yield multiplier per level.

you can look for a corp in low/0.0 that PVP's and also has an industry division. Then you can mine ore and sell it to the research people to build ships for the PVP guys. You can have the PVP people cover you while you mine; or at least can patrol your area while you mine so you have help fairly close if you need it. This will give you some excitement and a sense of purpose

Well it sounds like the general consensus is as I thought. I will begin looking for a low/null sec Corp to partner with.
Any input on fittings?

Let me rephrase what I'm willing to spend -- With money set aside to replace a fitted hulk twice in a day, I have 800mil I'd be comfortable spending to get fitted right.
