Atmospheric Flight.

I know at this point in the game, it would almost be useless (until dust comes out...if it ever actually comes out)

It burned up on re-entry

WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place...

Atmospheric flight really only works with aerodynamic vehicles, usually with wings. You might be able to pull it off with a rifter (if gravity doesn't pull the rifter apart), but for many ships, they will become bright shiny shooting stars for awhile until they imbed themselves into the ground with all the grace of a falling brick.

modern science has pretty much proven that you can make a turd fly with the right computer system. whose to say that in a few thousand years that they would still rely on primitive flight mechanics for atmospheric flight.

I'm pretty sure CCP broke atmospheric flight when they started work on DUST making it PS3 only. it was more of a "look what i can do!" than it was a serious vision of the future for eve. Now, had they have gone the route of making DUST PC only they could have completely implemented seamless space to atmosphere to ground gameplay along with Ambulation. The possibilities were endless, but now you know, CCP knows best lol Roll

I think it also had to do with the "look what i can do" factor by making dust/eve cross platform.

Not saying i dont support it. I'll be buying Dust, but you're right, going from orbit to atmosphere and potentially docking/landing on the surface would have been ****.

many modern fighter jets are as aerodynamically unstable as a brick but stabilized by computers. Being unstable allows for greater maneuverability by the pilot.

There was also mention of tritanium being highly unstable when in atmospheric pressures and exploding or catching fire.
