A (perhaps stupid) question

So this is my question:

What exactly does a salvage tackle do?

Does it just make it so your salvager has to run fewer cycles before successfully salvaging the wreck or does it actually help the chance you'll get something out of the salvaging?
Furthermore, does it affect the quality of your salvage?

1. It increase the success rate of your salvager module. For example your Salvager I has 15% chance of successfully salvaging a wreck, with one salvage tackle I rig it will be 25%.

2. No.

Still does not fully answer my question.

Does having a tackle on my ship mean that my salvagers will have to run fewer cycles before successfully salvaging the wreck?

Does it decrease the chance I'll pop the wreck without getting anything out of it?

Yes it did.

For the most part yes. That's what a chance based system is. It increases the chance that you will successfully salvage.

No, as above, it will increase the chance that you will salvage. It will not increase the chance that you will get anything out of it.

It also makes it possible to salvage wrecks that would be too hard for you to salvage otherwise.

Someone with a 100% chance of salvaging a wreck, and someone with a 15% chance will get /exactly/ the same salvage out of any given wreck. It's set when the wreck is created. Your skills do not affect it.

The chance to salvage is per cycle. So, at 15%, each time your salvager cycles, you have a 15% chance to have it complete successfully. If you fail, all that means is you have to wait longer. At 100%, you'd salvage successfully at the end of a single cycle (though you might still get nothing).

They might not seem worth it, but they're enough to tip the balance to the point having more tractor beams than salvagers makes sense.

Woo! CSM XI!

So how do I know if there is a wreck I can't salvage? Will it pop up with a message saying so or will it just pop the wreck and pop the "you failed to find anything of value"?

I ask because I have never some across something I can't salvage.

It explicitly says your skills are insufficient. "hard to salvage" wrecks include NPC commander wrecks, some high end sleepers wrecks and big t2 ships wrecks (e.g. marauders).

Somewhat related, I had a guy swear to me today that "More people in a wormhole system increase the amount of salvage dropped". I rather doubt this is true, but I could be completely wrong.
Any ideas?

Pure speculation. It is similar to how other MMO's have had legends of an "anti-camp" radius.

We're watching numbers on this too. So far it LOOKS like fleets bring in more per site, but its still a smaller sample than i really want to speak on. You get some runs that show it, then you get one guy that decides to MINE and gets 7 ribbons. x.x

Without level 4 salvaging you will not be able to salvage BS wrecks in a C3 wh and higher, no matter what rigs you have. Can't remember the error though as it was a long time ago. But it definitely tells you you don't have the skills.

I have salvaging 3 and used to use a noctis with 3 salvage tackle rigs to salvage C6 wormhole sites.
