limited api and full api key for recruitment

I just finished all my tutorials , took me some weeks because of real life priorities and now i am trying to find a corp that suits me the most
Problem is that each time i either get refused right away ( no experience) or i am asked for my full api key
So my question is when i give out that key for what can it be used and can you keep track of a character progress afterwards 
so this is permanence

Anyone that's asking for a full api key is behind the times. Unless it's just a CAK, with a complete access mask.

Anyway, what you can do, after they've looked through stuff, is delete the key. Then, they no longer have any access to look at stuff.




The api is read only access to your character/account. So they can see what you're training, what's in your mail, all that kind of thing (depending on the permissions granted in the access mask)

Yes, requiring the API key when joining a corp is common practice. And it's also usually not dangerous in any way. The API access doesn't allow to change anything. It's just viewing things.

However, the full API key lets them even see things like EVE mail and pretty much everything else. But you can configure the access of the API keys now. Have a look at the API key management site to see what you can chose.

Now it's a matter of taste/trust what you are willing to offer and what they require from you.

Usually corps ask for your API for the following reasons:

- Check your skills (and skillqueue) to see what skills you have trained
- Check your mail history (see who you had contact with in the past)
- Check your wallet transactions/journals (to see if you maybe an alt who gets it's money from the main, sometimes used when your alt is a spy. Also they can read back if in the past this character has changed ownership).

All in all, API's are always read only based, they can see what you have (skills, assets, wallet, etc) but can't change anything at all.

you can also see who/what (by IP at least) has been requesting things via your API

The thing to remember about requests for API keys during corp recruitment is that in Eve spying, stealing and screwing people over are all parts of the game and fully allowed.

Players have come up with ways of trying to shield themselves from that. Checking you API data is one of those methods.

Curiosity killed the Kata... ... but being immortal he wasn't too worried about keeping a count.

Most corps have a forum mod that will grant access based on corp membership. If you quite a corp you lose forum access automatically what takes away quite a burden from leadership. The same applies to folk that stop playing. The API will stop working too and thus forum access will shut down too.

If you take all the sand out of the box, only the cat poo will remain.

If corps are worried about spies, can't they just request a screenshot of the game's character selection screen? That way they can see if you have alts on the account.

I've heard some corps are doing this rather than asking for a full api.

that was done a lot in the past.
I guess smaller corps who don't know what they're doing in that regard still might ask for that ... but it's pretty easy to game...

As mentioned above you, a lot of corps (and, I would assume a high number of alliances) use the API key for verification into their forums.

You can also use the API Key for your own needs. See this Tutorial for EVE API and google docs.

That was before APIs existed... and what would be the point of screenshot if 10 minutes work in paint is enough to make it look the way you want it to?

API key doesn't cover that either - unless he has had some contact between those 2 chars (ISK transfers, evemails, contracts, etc..) Good spy would not have any such contacts for his spy account, and so API key would not reveal anything usefull.

This is something we did in the past but its more annoying and not as trustworthy to be honest. Anyone who is decent with any kind of editing program can change the screenshot and "hide" your other chars,or change your wallet or whatever you need.
Atleast thats why we changed it to API key's instead if i remember correct. Sorry its been a long time since we did this heh.

API keys cant harm you in any way unless you do have something to hide and you can just delete the key afterwards if you are worried about it.

Now for the OP. Im sorry you have had bad luck finding a corp so far. Just be patient. Go to the recruitment section of teh forum,make a post and take your time. Read over the posts that are there as well and see if one of them is what you are looking for. If you are new you might want to hold on with trying to join a pure PVP/merc corp since these tends to have a higher sp requierment.

you can now create your own keys, so for recruitment we usually just ask for access to standings and skills. There is no need for all the other data imo. Security of a corporation isnt dependent on having full access to all of your api data and corporations can glean information from other non-intrusive means if they put the effort into it.

Also, it may be beneficial for you to find corps like ours that are 'new player friendly'. You can find them by searching for them in game in your corp neocom recruitment tab or in your CQ.

I just wanted to clarify the above:

An API Key does not, in any way, grant access to your account, nor does it reveal passwords or account names. It only allows a player to view information about your characters, based on what you (the player) decide to set as 'visible' in that particular key.

Be very cautious about granting someone 'full' API Key access -- that will allow them read your in-game eve-mail, view your skill-queue, and will reveal your wallet balance. As in all things, trust your instincts and never be afraid to say 'no'.
