Hi guys,
I'm new to making videos. I've never really done any video recording or editing before (bought fraps yesterday). I need some help trying to figure out how to go about doing this. I've been doing a lot of reading tonight to try to put this all together, but I wanted to vet it first. If you think I'm using the wrong programs, PLEASE let me know. I don't really have a clue what I'm doing yet and any advice would be much appreciated.

Recording: FRAPS (obvs)

Use virtual dub to repackage raw video into AVI 2.0

Edit with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 (seems to be pretty good for 50 bucks. If you know of a better one for a similar price, I'd be more than willing to listen to recommendations)

Render from Vegas with lossless codec - here's where I have no idea what to use. Does movie studio have a built in lossless codec that plays nice or do you need to find another one? I've heard good things about lagarith.

Encode with Staxrip. I've also read that handbrake and super aren't bad either. What are the thoughts on these programs? I've also read that the x264 auto-encoder isn't bad.

Thanks for all of your help

I initially started this post off w/ a question that I found the answer to, however the main point still stands. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. At this point I'm pretty much just a monkey pressing random buttons and occasionally getting what I want. Any resources and tutorials aside from the following posts on the forums would be much appreciated.

Recording : Fraps
Editing : Vegas
Compositing : Adobe after effects

I use XVID MPEG-4 as codec, gives pretty small files with little to no vid loss (you can also decide the quality/size ratio)

As for tutorials, well you gotta play with the programs and learn some basics from tutorial and some tricks from dudes on youtube. Eventually you'll be able to make your own effects and stuff.

Hit me in game if you need.

I just render the vegas project into a .wmv, the format isn't really that important tbh as long as it's the same resolution as the source files. I then use the x264 autoencoder to make it into .mkv

Thanks for the input guys. It's probably because I have no previous experience making videos, but I want to use lossless codecs until my final processing. I like x264 for the final, but most of the converters for x264 do not seem to like lagarith as an input codec - handbrake, etc. Can anyone recommend a better codec/container to use than lagarith/avi to render from my editing program (currently the trial version of vegas movie studio hd 11 platinum).

I wish you the best on your editing journey.

With regards to Lagarith, it's pretty good compression - you could also try HuffyUV, but you might end up with the same results.

A question to ask yourself is: are you going to upload this to a steaming site; or do you want people to download it?

If you're going to put it on YouTube, then the compression and container is not very important, as you can upload an uncompressed file and people will stream to whatever suits them.

I'm of the opinion that a quality video is not about the quality of the rendering, but the content of the video. Give me a fuzzy, blurred out PvP video over an elaborate video on a POS bashing any day. People will not balk at your editing/rendering/compressing skills, if you capture and show them PvP nirvana.

Combat in New Eden is a blob, or a work of art...your editing cannot change that.

Drop me a line if you want some pointers, or I can jump on eve-voice. For now, all I can say is just keep frapsing and playing with the tools you got at your disposal. Put something together, upload it and ask for constructive criticism - people will tell you straight if you ask them.

Lastly, a high percentage of the videos uploaded in these forums could have probably been edited on window movie maker and it would not have made any difference to how good or bad people thought they were.
