It doesn't matter if you are in an all T1 fit frigate, if you can get into a fleet of half decent pilots, then do it. Do it sooner than later.

There is SOOOO much more to combat in Eve than just shooting at other people. It's a mind bogglingly complicated set of rules, timers, methods, attacks, counters, on and on.
Even if you never find a target or if you are two-shot killed in your first engagement- you will have gained a mountain of new information by the time you're done.

In fact, actual pew pew combat really is sorta hard to get to SP and isk-wise. In anything but a well fit ship you just won't last long enough to really learn much under fire. Even shiny fit ships don't survive long when primaried or just outflown by your enemy.

But there's just so much more to it than the wild a$$ furballs out in space- that just getting into fleets and whoring KMs by doing .02% of the damage will still teach you volumes more than any post or guide. Get voice comms, ask questions- Eve vets freaking LOVE to blather on and on- trust me.

Yes, it does make a huge difference having the ability to T2 fit a ship, or use T2 ships themselves. But that is just one very small facet to a much larger world of PvP that simple experience is the best teacher for.

Plus, it's fun. That's all it needs to be.

Okay... I'll try to articulate this as best I can (bear with me, I'm fairly inebriated)...

So I'm new and from what i've seen the only pvp that takes place is a group of people getting together to just go roam around and ambush some poor sap. No competition and no benefit from doing it besides the fact of just getting a kill.

To each his own.

But the big part in roams is that you are never 100% sure what you might deal with. You can fit your gang of ships to be as well rounded/specialized/off-beat as you can... but there is always that chance that you will run into another gang (be it veteran or newbie) or the [rare] solo player that is specifically prepared to deal with your group.
The "competition factor" comes from not being prepared for all scenarios you might run into and how you best deal with said situation.

what purpose would anyone like me have to do it. I know I know its a "sandbox game" you can do what you want, but that's like saying to a high school basketball team "sure you can play ball, but only against NBA players, HAVE FUN:)".

By being thrown into the "hardcore" early on you know [more or less] what to expect and can start learning sooner. Yeah... you won't "win" early on... but you will see what tactics other player use and have more time to devise counter-tactics to get around the other players' tactics... even with a "limited" skill-set.

Koodo Marilias wrote:
For a new player like me i would have no chance pvping without getting completely crushed so is there really any reason for me to attempt to pvp till i get like a years worth of SP and ISK, and don't say to get experience pvping because i don't think i need practice getting blown up( I'm guessing that's the easy part).

Getting "blown up" is a fact of life for any PvP player. In fact... anytime you undock you should prepared for the off-chance that you will be shot at... for any reason. If you are "blown up" it means that the other player used superior tactics, ships, had superior skills, etc. and you need to find a way around that.

I know pvp and all that goodness is what makes eve what it is. So really what I'm asking is grinding out missions or grinding rocks my only option for the next YEAR. Because that really sounds boring.

Pro-tip: You don't need "the best" skills to compete. Outside of "core skills" (which take about a month to train) you can be PvP ready by merely getting most of your skills in a specific area to level 4. Getting skills to level 5 only adds an extra 5% here... 2% there... and that is nothing that a few well placed mods and/or tactics can't get around.
Just remember... only a certain amount of skills apply to any one ship or mod at any one time... and players can only fly one ship at a time.

To try to determine who has the better combination of pilot skills, player skills, ship fit, tactics, and strategy.

Also for the lulz.

Also because without pvp the market would collapse and production alts around the cosmos would go idle and CCP would lose subs and shut down the game.

You don't want CCP to have to shut down, do you? Do you?!?

Very good then! PVP!

This ^

1.) There are a great number of bad fits out there. A T1 frig with meta 4 hardware, backed by lvl 4 skills, can kill them easily.

2.) I consider T1 frigs the 'Great Equalizer'. There is no margin for error. The ammo you load in your guns (before the fight) can determine the winner.

Take a perfectly new player... someone who's never played Eve in his life... and give him 60 trillion isk. Give him all level 5 skills. Give him faction-fit pirate battleships and every insanely-priced implant in the game. Now... put that player in lowsec and watch the train wreck commence. He will lose every damn thing he owns.

Take a veteran player who has PvP'ed for a year. Biomass his character, give him a brand new one with no skills trained. He will be killing people within the week.

Don't ever let low skill points stop you from experiencing what this game does best.

@OP

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
The fact that you can even ASK this question today shows how broken EVE has become.

New Eden should never present you the 'choice' of PVPing beyond the undock button.

Some people choose to PVP because it is the pivotal element of the game.

Maybe PVP because its fun?

Nothing in this game - admittedly my time is limited - has got my blood pumping, heart pounding and given me a rush like PVP has. Even though 9 times out of 10 i die, sometimes get podded too for good measure, i cant imagine getting the same experience from doing anything else within EVE.

Skill points are important, but real skills - as in piloting, not Skillpoints - count for more i think.

Many people have told me of idiot PVP'ers who fly expensive ships badly and get spanked by cheap and easily replacable ships by people that actually have skills when PVP'ing.

Buy a load of rifters ( or your racial frig type ) and fit them out cheaply and go into low sec and learn how to use your D-scan to find other frigs and dont be afraid of dying, because it will happen A LOT at first.

Stop thinking about the "why", start thinking about the "how".

Lack information ? Read up on the game mechanics.

You can win fights as a noob too ... given you know what you're doing.
Practice makes perfect.

Also, blobs don't matter ... again, you just have to be smart about it.

Although that's probably way beyond you for now ... but to cheer you up a little:

A blob is just a bunch of single targets you can snipe separately ! :D

The bounty system has been broken for longer than I have been here.
The original creators of eve knew full well that one was needed, but ccp have never come up with a good idea to enable it.

In my opinion, EVERY action you take EVERYWHERE, should reflect a concord bounty.
So in other words, if you shoot first, or steal etc, your bounty increases.
This also applys to standings.

Im sorry, but unless i have a good fleet around me, 99% of you (including me) are just not worth it.

and that brings us back to doing pvp for the love of it,

I love flying with the fleet. it is serious stuff.

i dont `love` pvp for pvp`s sake, unless it is a fair fight and hopefully, part of a tournament.

My hat is off to those amoungst us that do fight for the love of it, i give you full respect.
You will probably always have the edge on me.
But that is not most people... most people need reason..... a reward . to justify the risk

You should check out the podcast Bringing Solo Back by Kil2 and Kovorix. They have good discussion on the game mechanics of PVP and how to find good fights. Kil2's youtube channel is also pretty inspiring.

eve pvp is too fundamental to gameplay to have to need study podcasts to enable

this is the heart of eve we talk about, not how to get around silly mechanics

it is quite simple,

I see you

you look juicy

I kill you or you kill me

personally, i avoid all fights outside the fleet, where i could be said to be doing it for love

People like you don't add anything to the conversation and very rarely have any legitimate arguments worth listening to so why post and waste our time?

Like everyone said, fly in frigs and learn stuff.

By the time you get old enough to be flying expensive stuff the game becomes a huge efficiency war, so just going out and losing stuff sort of kills your reputation.

I would enjoy it while you can.

If I can suggest a corp Red vs Blue is a fantastic place for the young PvPer.
