The coolest looking ships in eve..... that you CANT fly!!!

Yes I'm talking about the fighter bomber drones:

exhibit A

Cyclops: awesome hull, evil looking, almost looks like a Battlestar Cylon fighter but with a Gallente edge! WIN!

Malleus: Ship so well designed even Bobba Fett would be envious of it's design. It's an Amarrian version of Slave ONE! WIN!

Mantis: Sexy, Sleek, Corporate Killing Machine! Just an incredible looking ship PERIOD! WIN!

Tyrfing: Love this design it's as if a Tie Fighter and a B wing mated and had an evil offspring. WIN!

So you have 4 of the coolest looking ship designs and yet none of them can be piloted, all drones, yeah nice one. Think about what makes those designs cool why they work so well, then go back and fix the banana boats, the half assed ONYX, and all the rest.

What works for me with these ships are the details, the sense of scale, you know how big they are because they have cabins and not just LED lights sprinkled across the hull, those design don't work as well because you can't tell their scale just by looking at them without comparing them to another object. The fighter bombers you can almost immediately tell what their scale is without having to compare them to other ships. Fighter bomber drones are way more believable then some of the less successful design.

I credit you that you have so many ships, but after 8 years it's time to get all of the ship up to the same level of excellence as the fighter bombers. Those ships are VERY well designed and have a great sense of scale and proportion and yet we can't even fly them.....

such a shame and missed opportunity....

But even the bigger ships have cockpit windows. I zoomed way on on my maelstrom the other day and found it. Tiiiny tiny windows.

That's not a window, it's a light pimple.

Again FAIL design if you can't tell right away.... it should be obvious and immediate. An example of a well designed ship that has scale would be a nyx or the minmatar version, cant remember the name, both have a sense of scale thanks to the lighting on the hull. again little details clue you about the scale.

Was there just one designer for the ships in eve or several?

List some designs you think work well and others that you feel are not quite there yet, post them here

criteria for ship designs
WIN
1. Can you clearly tell the scale of the ship at a glance?
2. Does the lighting/reflections help to separate details in a meaningful way?
3. Is there a good balance between small and large details, paint that is applied appropriately and follows some logic etc.

FAIL
1. You can't tell the scale of the ship by looking at it
2. Which is the front and which is the back of the ship when the engines are off?
3. Can you tell if you're looking at the TOP or BOTTOM of the ship?

example

WIN
Hawk

1 2 3 are all satisfied. Scale, cabin front back top bottom all very clear.

Fail:
Onyx

Onyx is sexy...

Thank god you are not a Dev, or in any way affiliated with CCP, otherwise we would all be flying symetric Space ships with likenesses to other unimaginative designs linked to Sci Fi series already in existance.

I <3 Eve's uniqueness, and oddly love the design you are heralding as the fulcrum for your conformist notions of internet spaceships.

Another sexy ship... Aeon
another... Tempest
another... Merlin
another... Rupture
another... thorax

Scale... known from experience... awe inspiring sexiness... determined by size and number of light pimples.

Look at Omen, it has omg small many windows in its front making it look like smth really HUGE!!! And Abaddon on the over hand has those windows small. Logic says those must in fact huge walls of glass you could put a track through!!

Caracal and Raven too used to have "cockpits" that would in fact reduce their sense of scaling. Fortunately they changed it.

As for fighters and fighter bombers I think that those are simply of a newer design. Probably lead designer is another person than the one who accepted Dominix/Moa's looks into the game.

When were the fighters introduced?

Also don't think we had that many hulls introduced in last years. T3's in 2009 that look nice in overall and tier3 BCs which are also good(except for Naga, tho Oracle is omfg fapfap :)

Maybe new designs(if any) will be better. Look at the new Raven!

Amarr Frigates

The Executioner with its critical angles reminds me of a spear, or talons. Savage.

The Crucifier with its disproportionate, lopsided sizing reminds me of an emaciated emu laying on its side waiting to die. Terminal.

The Inquisitor's curved, tapering hull looks like someone dropped a grub worm in a glass of water. Weak.

The Magnate's war axe hull and symmetrical propulsion pods is a dignified craft of war. Strength.

The Tormentor is the Inquisitor with a skin condition. Sickly.

The Punisher is not much to look at, though the general feeling is that it's flying backwards. *shrug*

I happened to be looking at the fighters last night too and thought they looked cool also. I've also wondered about all the lights in other ships. Do you think cruiser+ ships are supposed to have crews in them (based on all the apparent window lights)? Or just one big machine connected to the pod?

Finally I think the Noctis is the worst offender in the sense of scale thing.

If you cannot name a ship you are referring to, and you are too lazy to even look it up via the item database, this makes your post and replies lose any credibility they have, if any...

Haha funny thing I found a "MaxPassengers" line in pyfa in ship's attributes)) 450 for BC vessels. Guess they have crew.

How about the coolest looking useless ships.....ALL the Shuttles look flat out amazing....but you can't put anything on them :( If they turned them into frigates somehow I'd buy all of them in a heartbeat.

CCP did put out a chart once with crew numbers. Our ships need crews, just smaller then non-pod equipped ships.

Aeon is a prime example of a fail design. No way to tell if its forward backward or sideways and the hul jus looks like a dissected diagram.

Tempest has the same issue... fail

Merlin PASS

Rupture FAIL (drill much?) incomplete design.

Thorax PASS l don't like the design but that has to do more with my personal taste.

I know its been talked about a lot, but the Scorpion still to me is probably the most attractive ship. You could include the Widow in that being the same basic design. I agree the Hawk/ Worm / Merlin are excellent as well, at least to my eye.

Yes, it's because they are well designed.

Raven is a cool looking ship with a tumor, it's one of those ships that walks the fine line of PASS/FAIL

I have nothing against asymmetric design but it should also follow the three basic rules

1. Easy to tell front from back.
2. Variation of scale of modules and easy to tell scale of ship JUST BY LOOKING.
3. Believable design.

Scorpion actually has a little RADAR rotating which I think is a nice touch.

Where is the engine room, where is the gravimetric sensor located, where is the targeting system located on ships, what about the capacitor batteries???
If these were actually part of the design we would have more believable ship designs.

currently all we can see are turrets, great start but what about the rest?
