This may be an old topic but i can not find it either way. Does anyone know how to scan down mining opportunities like hidden belts? And any other information on security i would need for it.. thanks!!

Youtube can also help to improve your technique.

Google for the site names and what you need to access them.

First responder gives good advice. It's not what I was going to suggest, but it is good advice.

Mining 'sites' are cosmic signatures of the gravitometric type (grav). They are scattered throughout k-space (hisec, lowsec, and nullsec) and w-space. Generally, value-wise, hisec < lowsec < nullsec < w-space. Generally, also, their difficulty to scan is in-line with their value ... less valuable = easier to scan.

To find them you need to use scanner probes, with 'core' type of probes having the greatest strength for that purpose. You just locate the grav sites, scan them to 100%, take a bookmark, then head there and mine.

When I used to do this in hisec it was unusual to have a 'hidden belt' entirely to yourself, and they were small enough for one person to clear before they despawn. I have never done them in lowsec, but some of the nullsec ones are interesting (I vaguely remember a huge 'spodumain moon' at one) and can be moderately valuable ... if you're in blue territory with nothing else to do. The w-space ones can be huge and valuable, and cannot be cleared before they despawn unless you have quite a large fleet of hulks on the job.

I don't remember for sure but think the hisec ones have no rats, and the nullsec ones with BS rats. I work the w-space ones from time to time now and they have a single spawn of sleepers ... and the only one I've run post-crucible had two spawns.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

I appreciate your time to clearly articulate an answer unlike most others. I have found the youtube video and i am ready to train and explore this avenue. Thank you

In Addition to the Grav sites some of the larger regular belts (ones with a diameter grater than 800 kms)have portions that are off grid from the warp in.

this may sound odd but these larger belts belts ussually do not spawn centered on the warp in, if they did all roids would be off grid. When warping to these larger belts you only see a partial arc which is only a portion of the total diameter. If you know what to look for these belts are obvious when you warp into them.

This is not very common, but each of these over size belts can potentially spawn roids along the entire circumference of the belt. you can judge the circumference of the belt based on the arc of the section of the belt that is visible. Using a small fast ship like a interceptor or Dram you can quickly follow the radius of the arc off grid to find out if there are any hidden sections off grid from the main part of the belt. I have only ever found these in 0.5 and lower systems(more common in null where they are not needed) but they are there if you know where to look.

P.S. all high sec grav sites have rats but they are generally weak ones and do not respawn once cleared.

They do respawn. But they're weak.

From my days in highsec... To properly do GRAV sites you need a dedicated hauler as well, Orcas work well. If you do not, the RADAR and MAG sites will bring in more money and are much quicker to do.

LADAR sites are gas mining sites. You see them from time to time but the Highsec ones generally are not worth the time unless you are hard core into boosdter production.

I would not recommend doing lowsec GRAV sites. Mining fleets are big fat targets and any lowsec person worth their salt can peg a mining op in under a minute.

The rats that spawn in highsec sites are basically belt rates, a flight of T1 light drones is all you need for protection.

Grav sites have the local rats, IIRC. Highsec ones WILL have rats if <0.9, but they'll be the usual wussy frigates that are only a threat to untanked industrials.
