Hello,

Been running missions and looking to advance to the next ship. I have tried the Raven and I am not happy with its speed. Are the Assault Ships really as bad as I have read?

Assault ships arent bad, but I wouldnt use one for PvE, except in those low rated deadspace complexes.

Also the next step for you would be a Tengu, or a Raven while you train for a Tengu (I know you just said you dont like the speed, but you're more likely to be able to fly a Raven better than a Tengu currently)

This game needs to have its name changed to "Tengu Online". For every thing you want to do in EVE, there is a Tengu for that.

What he said, but with more Tengu. The Nighthawk isn't that great of an upgrade. I wouldn't bother with the Raven/CNR/Golem route either once you can Tengu.

For completeness, the upgrade path from the Tengu is the Mach.

If your board-Caracal Navy Issue
If you need a nap-Tengu
If you like to micromanage-Golem
If you wanna fell like a big man-Navy Raven
If you want a bigger drake-Navy Scorpion

Epic fail?

Flying a Raven badly while training for a ship that uses totally different weapon systems makes no sense. A poorly-flown raven is worse than a drake. Your EFT DPS might be higher, but applying it will be harder and your skills won't be as high. Either of these two paths let you stay in the drake while you skill up your Heavy Missile skills:

Drake -> Nighthawk
Drake -> Tengu

The Nighthawk lets you stay in your Drake as you push BC to 5, but the Tengu's a bit better (and more expensive, gankworthy).

He already said he can fly a Raven though, he has the skills, just spend a few days training them to a respectable level that makes the Raven not a failure then train for a Tengu

The simple Raven is always a failure. The only time it makes sense as a stepping stone to a CNR or Golem.

Nice, an alternative to the Tengu. Looks like a winner.

It really depends on what you like more. To run around, or stand still / slowly move to next gate while you are killing everything.

A BS is totally different from a BC/T3. Its really about playing style.

Just noting on the nighthawk, if you already have all the requirements for a tengu (level 5 engi/elec/navi etc), just go for a tengu. Skilling for it will be much faster.

A tengu will move a bit faster and do more damage and have better range, while the nighthawk have a bit better tank on the same fits and modules, but lower dps/speed.

If in serp / gurista space -> go for tengu

If in blood / sansha space -> go for nightmare

If in angel space -> go for mach

Stay away from: raven, navy raven -> those are C.R.A.P.

i'd prefer both.

auto mach needs some moving around and mwd. maybe i am too noob but i feel vulnerable without tank or with multi billion isk tank.

i personally prefer duo tengu+arty mach (full t2 fit, nothing expensive at all since it almost never catches agro). tengu takes care of all the small stuff while mach picks out the battleships. works nice so far. In fact I used Maelstrom before but then I realised I'll get full RoF bonus in mach plus the falloff and the damage bonus that will compensates for a missing turret, plus saves ammo.

I also tried vindi+mach but that epically failed when I tried to kill some elite frigates with 5 med drones... so it seems like tengu+arty is the best (dual boxing) duo possible....

From Drake to obvious upgrades are nighthawk and tengu, as pointed out above.

Later on you might want to add Golem or CNR and Nightmare to your ship library and switch ships based on what kind of mission you get for level 4's. Dont know about Mach - I hear they are good but have no personal experience with these.

Here, sanity... niiiice sanity, come to daddy... okay, that's a good sanity... THWONK! GOT the bastard.

Mach can get some pretty crazy fall-offs with ACs, but that's a whole different set of training from the drake. Guns -> Missiles, Caldari -> Min, Gallente , etc.

I also tried a Rattlesnake, but was underwhelmed. Sentries seem to take damage too often and I have to babysit them to avoid losing a few.

The thing I like about the Strat Cruisers is they force you to level some very important skills to V. Their general training path seems to be one that helps a great many fits and performance outputs than any other ship.
