Skills for and viability of shield-based capitals

So everything I see about capitals lately is Avatar this, Revelation and Moros that. Outside of the occasional POS repping Chimera or a specific wormhole, I don't hear much at all about the shield based capitals. I know people "gank-fit" the moros in order to crank a ludicrous amount of DPS out of the XL blasters, but beyond that...zip.

What I HAVE heard is that part of the reason, at least as far as dreads are concerned, is capital missile are worthless. As fun as it seems to send a cruiser sized missile after something, it appears that unless that something is an MWD'ing titan, you would not be doing much damage. The fact that the Nag has split weapons is another matter to consider.

Secondly, I've heard that the lack of a shield version of the Slave implant set hurts and contributes to the current armor cap domination. While this is more of an issue for the Titans, it is still pertinent.

That all said, I want to fly one. Don't try to dissuade me with horror stories of EHP or missing the broad side of an Erebus with a citadel torp.

Probably starting with a Chimera, or possibly on the Minmatar side of things, I would like to start training (not this character) towards being a capable shield capital pilot. In your opinions, should I start with a carrier or dread, and which one? What are the pros and cons of each race/role? Please also clue me in on what a good skill path would be.

TL:DR: I wanna fly shield caps. Don't say "Train Amarr/Gallente". In your opinion, where should I start? Which race? Carrier or Dread? What skills beyond the immediate prereqs will I need?

Thank you

Train Caldari if you're looking for carrier/supercarrier, Minmatar for Dread/Titan

Caldari carrier isn't auto-primary, and the Wyvern has a better bonus than the Hel.

Naglfar because at least only half the DPS is missiles, plus it's vertical. Rag because it's a turret titan.

The triage Chimera isn't that bad if you have Caldari Carrier 5 and live in a wormhole... IMO. The Wormhole part is so that nobody laughs at all the faction you have to fit to get a workable fitting. :)

Ed: If you want your alliance to love you, train a Nidhoggur. Best POS repper in the business. ;-)

I'm an idiot, don't mind me.

as you noticed problem is missiles, they are not broken like XL turrets, with missiles damage scales with scan res, with XL turrets all it takes is lucky shot and bam instapop

I see. So not only does the Nag need two weapon systems trained to XL, but half of it's damage is not really applied on anything besides another capital? Damn, I almost wish the phoenix was a rail boat now...

That said, I'm still interested in the carrier side of things. I realize the Nid is seen as a POS buddy, and the Chimera is dificult to T2 fit right, is there ANY redeeming quality? I asked around yesterday, and the only chimera pilot I could find basically used his like a big blue dumptruck.

What do you want to do with these shield capitals? PVP, wh escalations???
I have toons that use a chimera and a phoenix. Phoenix only really use for pos bashing, oh an destroying interbus customs offices. I would suggest training for the carrier first, you will use it more often, stop at carrier 4. Once you have that to actually fly the phoenix is 1 skill book away. Then you will need to train for torps and the triage mod's. Then do the carrier 5 then fighter 5. This is what I did anyway.. I don't have any real intention of training dread 5. or citadel torps 5.

edit-- I have no faction gear on it and it works great

Chimera and Phoenix pilot checking in.

I trained a Chimera for C5 & C6 wormhole escalations. I trained a Citadel Torpedo Phoenix because it doesn't take much additional to train. I own a Chimera, but I've never needed a Phoenix; I've only played with them on SiSi. I trained a Chimera because my corp asked me to, as we had mostly Archon pilots and needed Chimeras for our Tengu fleet, and I was going to train Caldari Battleship 5 eventually anyway.

If you are an average grunt, then a carrier and a dread is all you will ever experience, and very likely a carrier will be the most useful capital to you.

Note that the only major difference between training carriers is racial battleship 5. There is a bigger skills difference between dreads (and titans).

The only other carriers that interest me are the Nidhoggur and Archon. I may train for those simply by heading towards pirate faction battleships like the Machariel (Gallente / Minmatar) and the Nightmare (Caldari / Amarr).

they fixed cap shield tranfers, you can fit a chimera like an archon now with T2 fittings now.
chimera is now pretty awesome.

as far as shield caps go, chimera is WAY better than a nid and a nag is WAY better than a phoenix, tho a shield moros is still better than both.
