I remember in 2008 trying to get it to run on my Dell Ubuntu laptop Lol and I couldn't get the log in fields to appear. I've been playing on Windows but am thinking about messing with Linux again just for something to do. Is EVE playable on Linux now?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Probably yes (Also known as "Everything works for me... so far")

This is a bit ignorant i guess....

The last EVE patch broke the captains quarters with wine crashing directly if enabled on login.

Also the ingame browser is not working for me for quite some time.

Since Incarna quite a few things are broken with a vanilla wine, which will not work out of the box, but requires visual studio and d3d addons through winetricks.

So i would say the current situation is not the best with wine and EVE, but if got it to run it works somehow but not with all features.

why would you use captains quarters ?

performance and all the settings - works
eve voice - works
igb - works except ssl sites

my current problem is that I cannot use probes without tricks, since they go inactive (can't grab and move them) in the solar system map. this broke with crucible 1.1.1 ...

Yes, in general EVE stills works currently, but sadly it is degrading slowly again.

Also not many bug reports can be read on the wine page, so it is completely unsure if and when the problems will be addressed or if the maintainers even know about them.

CQ works fine by overriding d3dx9_42 and d3dx9_43. Performance is not really good, but at least it doesn't crash.

Not being able to browse SSL sites with the in-game browser is the biggest hassle for me at the moment.

I have set both to native and installed them through winetricks.

I does not work and still crashes at loading.
I also cleared the cache and such.

Can you be more specific what you did so it will load?
