Well I was wondering complexes turn up more often in certain system securities, or if it is totally random

Nope, it's all random (within the systems a site can spawn in that is, so no 3/10s in nullsec and etc). A 1.0 system spawns the exact same sigs as a 0.5 system and so on.

The only 2 things that are confirmed on where sites spawns are pirate faction space and general security (high, low, nul).

Some believe sites are tied to regions, but there is no hard evidence of this. In fact, if you know what you are doing, you can find evidence to support the opposite.

Don't forget your lucky charm. Similar to Tom Hanks in Cast Away, I have a fake buddha face I've painted an old beer can. Before scanning down a sig, I make sure to rub the can exactly 7 times.

Disclaimer: Whatever lucky charm you choose will not help you at all, but at least you'll have a lucky charm to blame when you keep finding nothing. Cool

Random. However, there are a few tricks to make your scanning more efficient, but I'll leave that up to you to figure out. Cool

Yes, they are worthwhile.
Personally, I would only put exploration implants in an alt that is maxed out for scanning. Create the ultimate probing character.

The Poteque ones are worth it, the Virtue set I'd only buy if I was a hardcore WH dweller scanning hundreds of sigs every day.

Never had a problem with probing any site with astrometrics 4, a covops ship, a normal probe launcher, and normal probes. Sure the hardest possible 10/10 deadspace complexes can be a bit tricky to probe down, but its nothing a little time and skill can't fix. IMO, all the fancy faction probes, launchers, implants, are 100% worthless. Everything can be probed down without them.

I bought a full virtue set when I was trying to scan down a semi-afk tengu booster alt and the guy was taunting me in local. Only used it that one time, but it was still worth it.

what Revii Lagoon sed! and this...

looking for a specific rat type???

gallente space = serpentis
minmatar space = angel
caldari space = guristas
amarr space south east = sansha
amarr space south west = blood
null north east = drone block

each region have a maximum number of combat site that it can spawn at any time.
example: not hard numbers!

aridia: (low sec region with highsec pockets)

3x blood 3/10 (highsec)
5x blood 4/10 (high/low sec)
8x blood 5/10 (lowsec)

10x blood annex (lowsec)
7x blood minor annex (lowsec)
12x blood provincial outpost (lowsec)
10x blood outpost (lowsec)
5x blood vigil (highsec)
5x blood watch (highsec)
15x blood lookout (highsec)

the same is true with mag/radar/grav sites.

the only 2 notable exceptions are:

escalations will take you all over. you may start in amarr space and end up in the ass end of cald space
Ladar are constellation specific but have a minor chance of also spawning inside the constellations parent region
