Not sure if these links have been passed around already, if so my bad but if not....

Hey i've noticed alot of people having issues with heating while playing on a mac so i thought i'd drop a few thoughts in.

If you THAT WORRIED about heating and wanna take steps to be a little more in control there are two handy programs i've been using to monitor and control how hot everything gets:

smcFanControl:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol

This cool little app lets you have direct control of your fans in the mac your using, so if you want to adjust the temp.

atMoniter: - already mentioned here
http://www.atpurpose.com/atMonitor/

A nice little piece of software to monitor system activity on your mac including the heat of your GPU, HDD and CPU.

A few things i wanna mention though:

  • All macs have a built in heat shutdown thingy, basically if you are running at a stupid temp then your beloved Macintosh will shut off to prevent damage.

  • If you do own a i-book-pro-mac-tower you ought to know by now that these things get HOT!!!!!! so really dont worry to much about the heat

  • THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION!!!! SMC IS NOT A SOLUTION PUTTING THE FANS ON FULL WACK 24/7 IS NOT A SOLUTION I just wanted to post this if people were thinking of using this all the time and and well you get the idea.

  • Here is the link where i got most of my information so just reference this if you can't take my word for i. it's full of do's and dont's so for godsake LOOK HERE FIRST!!!!!!!

  • [UPDATE] Ok example running EVE most specs on max (21.5" iMac 2.7ghzhzhz ect). Idle my temp is about 30'C.

Without smc temp reaches around 70'C while running EVE for 1 hour+

With smc on (turned up a little on all fans) temp reached a high of 37'C. 3 hours play time

Ok i hope that example gives you some idea of what im talking about. im not sure about Laptop cooling but i bet it has a nice effect.

I had this issue when I first tried EVE, briefly, years ago. IMac had no problem but the Macbook Pro kept getting hot and crashing.
Just started EVE again and on a new 15" Macbook Pro 2.2 w/ 8gigs Ram. Again, getting hot, it would crash repeatedly so much that I couldn't really play.

After reading some forums, I did two things; first, I got into the controls and started by adjusting quality control to Performance, then one by one, sliding the controls up until the graphics were where I was more than satisfied. Also turned off the Interior hangar effects to static only as well as Captains Quarters - didn't see any use for them anyway as the action is outside.

Second, I got a "wingy bit" for under the laptop, okay, a Logitech cool pad or whatever it's called for increased airflow. Now, I have NO problems, NO crashes and NO freeze ups with one exception: going into or out of Jita 4-4 where over a hindred others seem to like to camp out. Then I get the stuttering mini-freezes while I escape amidst the rush hour jam.

So far, so good. Oh, and I'm running EVE 8-12 hours per day with same no problems.

    Cheers!
