The One Time Paid Name Change That Works...

I understand this idea has been proposed countless times, and you must be sick of reading it, alas I have tried to tweak it to work in Eve, please give me your opinion. So without further ado, I propose:

The option to allow a one-time only name change per character for $30

Features:
-On character show info, it says AKA *previous name* or Formerly Known As *previous name*.
-Option to primarily show characters by their original name.

Common arguments against this proposal, and how to counter them:

  • "Too easily exploitable to hide scammers, thieves and other nefarious sorts."
  • -At main menu (or chat menu), include an option which only shows players with their original name. A scammer can no longer hide behind a new name, people who want to be extra safe can simply turn on original name option.

  • "Learn to live with the choice you made."
  • -This is a fair argument. However I believe players should have the option to change their names. We are in a completely different mind set about the game when we first start out, compared to a year in. As we rise through Eve's steep learning curves, we acquire more and more skills. However when we have finally "settled" into the game, when it feels like home, a lot of us realize that our character is important to us, and we feel we have incorrectly named them at the beginning. However, for many of us, by then it is too late, due to the skills we have accumulated.

  • "Large scale corp robbery, simply change name after"
  • -So the thief just paid $30 to change his name, however the corp members would simply have to click "show only original name". Thief doesn't win from name change.

    Conclusion:
This is a one time only name change, would a scammer really pay $30 to hide his identity when he could just create a new character with a new name? If tweaked correctly, this implementation will only benefit the long time players that have accumulated a huge library of skills on a character with a name they highly regret (I know there's a lot of you). Please post feedback and I will add it to this thread and attempt to counter it (if possible). I understand if you want to hate on me, you have every right to do so.

Could you give me your reason why please? You may be happy with your name, but there are many who aren't. So far I don't see how this implementation could be abused.

I happen to agree with CCP Zymurgist here,

EVE characters are built on reputation. Your name is who you are and will always be. Really the only way to "change" this would be to buy a new character and sell the old one off. All that will change is who is playing the character though as the name will always represent the character's past deeds.

In a game like Eve, your name is what people recognise as 'you'. Its what makes you unique and identifiable.

Why do we need long convoluted rules and code and dev time, to produse a system that allows only one change, that has to be viewable in your Bio, settings to show old names.... just so someone who can't pick something and stick with it, can change their name.

On behalf of a friend who always chooses really unfortunate names for his characters, and then later regrets them, I support this idea as long as it has the restrictions outlined in your post.

I don't always post on the forums, but when I do, I post with my main.

    No...

I would only support a name change (no pay) of character within 30 days of flipping from trial status to full status.

    Use ingame reminders.

Thats like the fourth time they shot it down and made that boundry to never to be crossed. Just like having more than 8 slots of any of the ships layers boundry never to be crossed.

I like the idea of putting the former name in the character description. Perhaps the former name would be removed after six months or a year later. I would further add that your standings should be affected by this name change. Basically, anyone NPC corp/empire that had a positive standing with you would have their standings reduced to zero. Anyone that had a negative standing with you would still remember the hatred, so the negative standings would stay. Basically, you'd end up retaining the bad standings and lose the good ones. Standings are pretty quick to fix anyway, but it'd still be an inconvenience.
