Can't make my mind up regarding Caldari and Minmatar

Hey, I've been playing for about 6-7 months now on my main character. I got an amazing opertunity(can't spell that word sorry) to join a 0.0 corp, I thought I might be to new for that kind of stuff but they welcomed me and they are awesome! I really enjoy it out here, even if I die now and then. Still haven't found out how to make that good amount of ISK.. ;)

But nevermind that thing, I have a little question regarding ships, weapons and such. As i'm currently trained to fly both Drake and Hurricane quite good, missing T2 Guns/Missiles as I thought tank was the most important when I started out as a missioner. Now I've came to the point where I have to choose what battleship to get. It is between Raven or a minmatar one.

I got the same amount of training for them, with exception of a few days maybe. I've gotten the impresion that caldari race, is worthless and can't do a **** in PvP.. While on the other hand, minmatar is worthless and cant do a **** in PvE.. And as I want one ship that can do both decently, so I can both rat and PvP in the same ship untill I can afford two battleships..

So my question is, what ship/race do you think I should go? As I already said, I want a ship that can be quite easily changed between ratting and PvP(small gang and POS bashing).

minmatar are worthless in PVE? where did ya get that?
Minmatar ships, when you fit them right, do one hell of a good DPS. I eat lvl 4 missions for breakfast with my Tempi and **** it out with my Mealstrom. [and i dont want to actually understand what did that mean... but just flow with me]
get some sp in your projectile skills. and as for PVP just armor tank a hurricane with double 1600 plates and you're on a good start. :)

Who told you Minmatar are crap for PvE? They've got the same ability to change damage types as missile boats do, and a well fit arty Maelstrom can do anything a Raven can. If you want one ship you can switch between PvP and PvE you're probably better off with Minmatar by a long shot.

Well, ALOT of people in-game actually told me Minmatar cant do a **** in missions and such.. I didn't really belive it cause my cane is almost as good as my drake except range. But as I'm quite new I trusted those people. But I will start training for a Tempest then I think.

One question about maelstrom and Tempest. CAN you armor tank both? I know Maelstrom is supposed to be shield, but sometimes its a armor fleet and such. And tempest, is it armor or shield ship, can't make my mind up on that one?

I still want a Tempest because of Clear Skies :P

Thanks for the replies so far.

The Mael is a shield tanker, it's got a lot more mid slots than low slots and a bonus to shield boosters. You could fit an armour tank on it, but you'd be gimping the DPS and ignoring the ship bonus. The Tempest doesn't have any tank bonuses, you could fit a reasonable shield tank along with plenty of damage and tracking mods or a good armour tank with webbers, target painters and other utility stuff depending on what your fleet wants you to do.

This could be dangerous. Personally I would never PvP in my only battleship because if I lost it I'd have a hard time making ISK. One battleship can keep you in battlecruisers quite comfortably for your PvPing needs and allow you to save up for a PvP battleship.

As for ship choice, I'm Minmatar all the way. The mael can put out a lot of dps and tank a lot too. A typical L4 mission takes about 20 minutes to blitz (off the top of my head, Ive never properly timed any). I prefer a tempest or hurricane for PvP though.

You shouldn't be armor tanking a mael. It has a hefty bonus to shield boosting, which should be used. Tempest can go either way, as can the hurricane.

I know you asked for a BS answer. But the Drake and Hurricane are both very good. The Drake can run any nulsec anomaly and make tons of isk with very little risk. The Hurricane is the FOTM as far as nulsec PvP. (Whelp-cane).

As far as battleships, either the Scorpion or MAelstrom would be your top choices for fleet PvP if you must limit yourself to Caldari or Minmatar. The scorp can armor tank somewhat. But it will need additional skills in electronic warfare to be useful. The MAelstrom is highly desireable for shield tanked alpha fleets, and requires no additional skills to be useful.

Right now I would say the most desireable choices for subcap fleet nulsec PvP are in this order, any logistics ship of the correct type, Abaddon, Hurricane, and Maelstrom.

It really depends who you are flying with, and what they are willing to reimburse. In your case, I would say go with the Maelstrom.

If anyone tells you that Minmatar isn't any good at PVE simply laugh at the idiot and ignore anything more that moron has to say. Minmatar are GREAT for missions, they have good damage, damage selection and their tanks are fine. Unless you go against Sansha or Bloodraider shield tank your ships, even stuff like the Hurricane.

Excuses are the refuge of the weak.

Dare I say both?

There are a lot of skills shared by Minmatar and Caldari ships.

your skills can go both ways.

Caldari are basically 100% shield and missiles (ignore the rokh, it's useless except as bait, smartbomber and mining right now)

Minmatar are around 75% shield and 25% missiles (25% armor and 75% projectiles) and your shield skills will treat you well in almost any matari ship (except possibly the rifter, the wolf, and the 'phoon)

The reason caldari are considered good for PvE is because missiles are basically the easiest weapons system to use, period. Choose damage, get within range and fire... if you want more damage, target paint and web, the end. Projectiles require a bit of piloting skill to get good angular velocities and their range is admittedly shorter than missiles, so you can't just semi-afk missions with them (turn on launchers, come back 1 minute later to swap targets)

Minmatar are better for PvP right now though because of their speed and because a well piloted gunboat does much more DPS than a missile boat.

One of my characters is a Minnie, and I am in complete love with my guppy (aka the Thrasher). It's an amazing ship. I'm a strictly PvE-style player (missions, exploration), and it's been perfect for my needs.

At the same time, my other character is Caldari, and I'm even more in love with my Drake. Not too long ago, I updated the modules to help me run Level 2s.

I'm really attached to both characters; each race have some pretty nice features that tend to meant my solo playstyle very well. I encourage you to explore and find out what ships and which race you prefer :D

I've run Caldari since I started playing and have just started playing with gunnery.

As stated earlier both races run PvE equally good (more or less, over time and patches).

In PvP Minnie can pack a huge instant punch (once upon a tima a phoon could crit you for 3k @ 100km per gun). They are fast too, the highest speeds in the game.

Caldari ships have great, if slow range: A raven can hit you at 180km for full damage, while still having a useful tank.

Other than that, noone can beat Caldari at ECM.

Okay, thanks alot for all anwers. I've decided to go with minmatar for a bit and then try out a raven a bit down the road.

Now, I got a lil' question, how can I make ISK in a Hurricane in nullsec. I need about 100mil to get a battleship with full fitting, but it will take me ALOT of time. I wonder if there is anyway except the 5mil/hour ratting.

And I mean solo because my corp wont help me a bit..

I would recommend belt ratting. with your drake. Chain the belts, if you are ratting in a system with low true sec status, you can earn about 8 mill every 20 minutes. You may also do anos, forsaken hubs are a good start with a drake.

Chaining: Kill off all rats in all belts until you get a BS spawn and leave one of the frigs at hull damage so you know which spawn is in the belt. The spawn will come back as a BS spawn.

CCP have nerfed the gain heavily during the last cpl years, but as Gul Barat stated it is still possible to make ~20M/hour in a well fitted BC through chaining.

Haven't played low-sec in over two years so I can't recommend sec status or region.

PvP and PvE in one package? Don't even want to have to refit from standard nano pvp fit for a bit of nullsec ratting?

Drake. Drake all the way.

I sincerely hope you're talking about the Thrasher there, and not the Drake.

I started out as a lowly rifter pilot.

Then i crosstrained for a blackbird.

Then i continued crosstraining, jumping to multiple different ships, jack of all trades master of none.

Now, 3 years down the road, I can fly all races and all tech levels of ships nearly perfectly in the frigate -> battlecruiser range, and am working on having perfect battleship skills too. Minnie BS done, caldari are next.

Do not feel like having to stick to a choice. Crosstraining is quite painless in EvE.

Disclaimer: I do not actually play this game, I just forum warrior.

If you are heading to 0.0 ask your new corp what BS they want. If they run RR armour gangs your choice will be made for you.

Personally I think you are best investing your training into the battlecruiser skill. The cane and drake are the best value and most versatile ships in eve. PVE and PVP. Train both and buy both. Start out using the ship you have the most complementary skills in and cross train as soon as it takes your fancy.

My advice,

Fly what you like the look of.... (strange idea?)

You spend a lot of time with your chosen ships - you might as well like the look of them.

Personally I wish I started toon two as Minmatar and not another bloody caldari.
