Since I'm returning to the game after a long absence, all the blogs the dev's are putting out amaze me. I especially love this one as I am a budding writer myself and dabble in EvE fan fiction. Having an easily organized wiki for the canon material and official fiction pieces kicks major butt! Big smileBig smilePirate

because employing the same term both for a particular type of story and for the entire bulk of all types of stories is a silly thing to do and leads to misunderstandings.

Can you explain this to the people that renamed ALL MISSILES of different types the same name...

For real though - great job.

No pictures makes me Sad but I understand the reasoning. You should allow for fan fiction submissions for chronicles, I'm sure some intrepid artists would be interested in being displayed on the EVE page for some kudos. I guess you have to deal with some kind of selection process, but I'm sure there's worse things to go through on a given Monday.

ON the note of categorizing the articles...

What is unwieldly about the Wiki Category system? This would auto-magically generate categories and sort them into various ones (Gallente Chronicles you have, but Add "Tech Articles", etc)

So all the Tech articles would have a Tech Article Category created instead of this :
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Tech_articles

I've used wikis extensively including modifying them and implementing some pretty crazy features (semantic based searches). So, I'm just not understanding what's unwieldly.

New Category : Stories that mention Capsuleers.

Category : People in Chronicles - a list of "actors" in the various chronicles with links to the chronicle they appear in. Some have multiple appearances, etc. Might be a lot of work, and some thought on implementation.

Sub-categories for Cultural focus (Society could work, but with sub-cats for empires). This would be for digging into the nuances of social interaction in those Empires rather than the "big themes" of galactic stuff the empires do. It would be more for players who are hyperfocused on that empire (for RP or otherwise) and want to get into some nuances. Let's say (for example) you were to write a story on Amarr linguistics, you'd have a Amarr Culture sub-category that you would put that into and it would help people understand the culture, not just the Galaxy views.

I think a lot of this could be fleshed out going forward in almost a series of scientific clinical fashion discussing the particulars of a races day to day things, as though written by a Gallente studying Amarrian behaviors, for example. You can even create a regular set of fiction characters that do this - i.e. "Doctor Jukla Huffnhuff - Social Anthropologist for the University of Caille". You could extend this to other fields, and maybe even have different Doctors competing or arguing at each other within the frameworks of some of the scientific texts, telling a story, etc.

You could apply this to a lot of new articles coming forward - focused more on clinical topics of discussion (which, don't have to be boring.) I know CCP moved away from this style a loooooooooooooooong time ago - and I think in the format of the Wiki some of those would actually have a good place if being created - and would feed some peoples hungers for juicy details, rather than the broad and sometimes ambiguous implications some of the narratives have.

Where I am.

Those are linked in the blog. Thanks for that.

The question was: how do you get from here to here.

There will not be any more chronicle artwork. I'm sad to see it go, but we have good reason to drop it. Art creation has always been a major bottleneck in chronicle production and a notable draw on the Art Department's resources. Moreover, art and thumbnails are not amenable to the kind of categorization we have in mind for the chronicles. It's easy to plonk down a thumbnail when all you've got is a 200-strong list of alike pieces; it gets progressively harder when you want to start reordering them in all sorts of ways.

I can't even begin to tell you how disappointing that decision is. The artwork was always equally as good (and as much of a draw) as the Chronicle's themselves. I think CCP should seriously reconsider on that point. Even if you reduce it, making it so not ALL of them have artwork, you should not eliminate it altogether. Please!

The disappearance of story specific art and the original thumbnail navigation is sad, since i don't
remember the name of all the stories but rather remember them by their pictures. But i see why
and the promise of more short stories are lovely, even if it's only flash fiction.

The fact that the chronicle site is such a behemoth of fiction goodness somewhat compensates
and forgives the leaving of art specific navigation. I'll just have to learn the names of my favorites
and buy a tablet so i can read them anywhere in a comfortable manner.

About the categories. Quafe company should have Quafe related stories linked like Lost star.
Quite hard to find it if you don't remember the name of it.

Maybe even link the respective story in the wiki article of the party involved?

It'll probably be categorical hell deciding which story to go where but i'm certain this fine community
of well spoken and willingly people can lend a hand.
Or maybe the people hanging out in fiction actually are fine and well spoken...
but they still play this game... nvm.

Double yay!

EDIT, and now from me: While collecting all these pieces of EVE lore has given me a rather strong insight in all the bits I am not too keen on signing up for your Mercury team. I am not a science fiction writer, I am a fictional science writer. And it hurts my scientist nerd organ whenever one of your volunteers forgets key pieces of EVE lore or, even worse in my opinion, make stuff up because of poor research and then THAT gets sanctioned as Prime Fiction. I know a writer often require a certain space of creative freedom to make good stories, but that is just not me.

Well, at least I can still theorize in the A'J Project. Btw. shake Dropbear and tell him that him that he has not made a noise in two months now and people are getting a bit confused on what to do with A'J in regard to the release of the Fictional Portal and Templar One.

I'm not sure whether to be excited that you are seemingly taking time out of your other duties to make this happen or sad that this doesn't appear to be a bigger priority but I am gonna go with EXCITED! Big smile

On a related note, I find it inspiring that the lore of EVE can actually be separated into genres like horror, intrigue & spying, politics, action & combat, and cyberpunk. Shocked

Keep up the good work.
