any Gila pilots doing L4s solo out there?

Hey guys,

So I recently looked up some Gila setups on Battleclinic, and I want to say the Gila looks like it would be interesting to run L4s with, so I would like some input into this decision.

I understand it is a drone ship, and would like to know how heavy drones and sentries compare/contrast, as well as how effective the Gila can tank (Its targeting range is around 50-60km while Guristas BS can hit out to 72km [ I think ] )

Also would like to know some tips, such as how I should orbit/kite...

Use Wardens, they hit at optimal beyond Gila's locking range. Wasps/Vespas/Hammers if bigger stuff gets close, Hornets/Hobs for small fry. Get aggro with the civilian launcher, drop sentries/can, orbit at one k or so. This fit tanks about 600DPS Gurista's. You can use T1M4 SPRs if you can't fit/use T2, works the same.

If all the triggers were activated and Gila has aggro, in general I'd say yes.

plenty of Gurista's BSes can hit out way further than 70km, so you won't be able to not take damage from them, but they only hit you with missiles so they do crap damage.

As far as AFKing goes, the easiest thing to do is agro all the rats, use sentry drones to kill the webbing frigs, then deploy ogres, and get a really wide orbit, if you have trouble tanking guristas, fit a 100mn ab, and make sure it is cap stable. Basically missiles will cease to harm you.

Easily doable but slow as **** depending on what you are used to. I'd actually fit heavy assaults to it and maybe consider an active tank so you can fit a ballistic control or two. Should add about 100 -150 DPS that way. Use sentries of choice to pop farther targets and switch to heavies if they are up close. Use an afterburner to speed tank while orbiting your sentries, you'll need less on paper tank that way.

I used the below fit for a long time before I got a Snake. Never had any problems. Just drop the sentries and orbit them at 5km. Launcher there mostly to get agro. Garde's will hit anything besides fast frigs under 10km.

imo only reason to use a drone ship is because you want to afk it

ishtar seems a bit more resilient so I use that instead.

thanks for all the input guys.

i guess this 'sentry drone orbiting' technique works, albeit really slow...

but the price tag of a Gila is only a fraction of a mission faction BS so i will definitely give it a shot.

now for my final question:

are the Gila specs you guys posted skill-intensive?

I'm at a humble 5 million sp and not sure if I can handle L4s with my modest skills in this multi-million isk ship

I would say as long as you can fit the T2 tank and have both races cruiser to 4 you will be good to go. The T2 sentry and ogre's you can switch for faction , if you have the iskies, they worth it, or T1. I would also say that you MUST have T2 light drones.. even though I seldom used them, they may save your ship if you going down and you are scrammed by a fast frig.

And once somebody scans down this ridiculous fit just once, you'll have packs of gank ships following you wherever you go. I'd guess something as ******** as the above fit would last 2 days before it was ganked.

Use a myrmidon or drake with a brick fit to learn missions. Use the gila once you understand them better. gila fits a good tank but bc fits similar tank with more buffer, so you get more time to deal with a trap and gtfo or get to range/speed whatever.

When I started, I could do all L4s from gallente agents with a double rep myrm and 3mil sp. But that was of course also pre-bandwidth-nerf, when I could go fetch 5 heavies if I needed to break tanks. Nowadays you have to clear everything else, remove a rep, fit 6 blasters and a couple of damage mods and give it a face full of antimatter if you have really low SP.

I'll try to adress a lot of this threads statements and questions.

Gila can solo L4's. (( without one piece of faction gear ))

It functions better with heavy drones compared to sentries.

It functions much better as a passive tank compared with active fits. (( fully passive ))
Tank will have more effective health then most bc fits.

It can out preform the ishtar on L4's. Not a good choice for afk or botting.

Gurrista ships are the most SP intensive of all factions.

Rattlesnake will do much better then a gila and is well worth it. (( I consider it the best L4 mission ship in game ))

I have personally tested what the gila/ishtar/RS can do. (( also golem/CNR )) All testing was preformed with max effecting missle/drone skills.

I flew this in Level 4's for a while, it works fairly well. Tanks around 600 dps therm/kin at my skills. The Power Diagnostics give extra cap, but probably aren't necessary if you don't use salvagers in your highs.

Personally, I tried heavies and sentries, and the travel time with heavies is just ridiculous. Maybe if you tired a 100mn Afterburner fit, but I don't thin the gila can fit that, it's very tight on grid/cpu.

When I learned L4s I spent 25M, bought an Hurricane and passive fit it.
Never risked losing it once. Of course it was not a fast thing, but for the sake of learning it's good.
