Played a Caldari in 2008... didn't work out.

Combination of RL and politics/drama caused me to bail out on the game... seems fundamentally the same as it was then, with more polish and more to do, perhaps.

Would like this the be a relaxing diversion, come home from work, have a whiskey, and so forth. Thought maybe industry, mining, hauling, that sort of thing. Not sure how feasible it would be on my own. Didn't try it last time around.

Looking for pointers, FAQs/guides gladly accepted.

Kind regards,

M

If you are unsure what to do, and is looking for some insight into different careers, I'd strongly recommend you check out ISK The Guide.
It has a few very good chapters on the subject.

As far as mining goes, Halada's Mining Guide is very popular.

If you want to check out the industry aspect of the game, you might want to try one of the (relativly) new features: Planetary Interaction, where you set up colonies and networks of harvesting and processing up on a planet.
If you're interested, I can also recommend the official Tutorial video

If you need more information on any EVE Online topics, you can always browse the Evelopedia

I hope any of the above links will be of use to you. Good luck

You don't have to stick to PvE to have casual fun. PvP can be casual and fun as well, particularly if you just fly ships that are inexpensive enough that you don't have to worry about exploding horribly.

Eve takes as much time as you let it take. It can be a casual thing, or it can be a full-time job. The choice (and self-control) are left up to you.

Yes, that does look interesting. Is this another large-initial-investment type of pursuit, I wonder?

Forgive me, as I don't recall much about PvP, but this still sounds like a losing proposition. I mean, I suppose I may enjoy being blown up...

Nah. It doesn't even require that many skills or ISK to get started. Of course, high level PI requires far more investment, but it also has very good opportunities for massive profit.

I enjoy being blown up! In fact, I enjoy getting into outmatched encounters because of the two possible outcomes: I either get blown up (which was expected, giving I am outmatched), or I get an astounding and unexpected victory. The challenge of getting the latter is how I get my kicks. The risk factor of losing all my money is mitigated by flying really cheap ships.

Anyway, that's one way to PvP, and there are a ton of others. The trick is finding the niche you like (if you want to do combat PvP at all).

One more query, seeing if I get any bites.

Since what I can do with PI is limited on the trial, I just wanted to shake out any more info that I haven't found on the guides, tools, videos, etc.

  • Does Sovereignty or Standing affect where I can drop a contol center?
  • How can I tell how many other colonies have been established by other players on a given planet?
  • Is there a timeline for when the colonies wil become destrucable?
  • What are the Tier 4 items used for? Who would I be selling this kind of item to, assuming I could build them?

Much appreciated, as ever.

Kind regards,

M

Does Sovereignty or Standing affect where I can drop a contol center?
Only in 0.0. You cannot place colonies on planets where your alliance does not have sovereignty.

How can I tell how many other colonies have been established by other players on a given planet?
You can browse over the planet and notice the command centers of other players. Click on them and you see their whole installation.

Is there a timeline for when the colonies wil become destrucable?
Not yet.

What are the Tier 4 items used for? Who would I be selling this kind of item to, assuming I could build them?

Various things. Some are used in Tech 2 production, some can be turned into POS fuel and other consumables, etc.

I would be less fatalist, and look at it as learning to blow the other poor sucker up.

Building on the cheap ship idea, for my downtime I always sign up for Faction Warfare. While the mechanics have been talked about to death on the forums, one of the good things is when I'm just looking for some meh time, I run complexes where I control what I can be attacked by, i.e, Minor complexes only allow frigates and destroyers, etc. This will give you that much more of an edge in your cheap-spectrum PvP.

Just my two isk. I also do PI and whatnot and it's rather fun for a pastime.
