Tips for Finding Fights

Hi C&P. Longtime carebear looking to learn how to defend himself. I'm following the Punisher Plan - buying a stack of T1 frigates and losing them all getting into lowsec fights, and then analyzing the fights to determine what worked, what didn't, and what I could have done better.

So far I've gotten great practice at manipulating the d-scanner, setting safes and gate watch spots, and determining what pilots in local may be worth fighting, but I have yet to even find anyone. My general tactic is warp to celestials first to determine what is in system, and then bounce between belts running d-scans to keep tabs on other ships in the system.

What are some good ways for finding fights in lowsec? Should I go somewhere like Amamake or Old Man Star and risk getting swarmed without really learning anything, or stay patient and keep moving around looking for targets of opportunity?

Any suggestions or words of wisdom from more experienced pilots would be great at this point.

I know it's lame, but have you tried HighSec PVP? Failing that, I'd avoid rancer and the like, though I suppose it can't hurt to try it once or twice. I usually just fly around until I find a fight, if at all. Although people generally tend to dock when an 08 jumps in unless they're in a gang, but meh.

Try hanging around some static DED1 or DED2 sites in lowsec. They tend to get you fights and possibly a bit of isk.

If you're looking for good fights you can always come to Hevrice. Other populated-but-not-usually-blobby nearby systems include Jov, Aeschee (don't be scared by local count - they're almost always docked up), Ladistier, Onne, Adirain, all of which are right next to OMS.

Another place you could try are the offshoot systems at Amamake; Dal, Vard, Egg, though sometimes a lot of FW gangs are there so you might not get the solo/small gang warfare you want.

Feel free to convo/evemail me ingame if you want some more help finding fights.

The key to getting the most fights is to seem weaker to your opponent than what you really are so they engage you first. Otherwise, good luck getting people to fight you fair and without evading your attacks (jumping a gate or redocking).

Those who fight fair are normally in small hull ships, like Frigates. If that's your thing, go for it. But, you will rarely find anyone willing to toss 70 to 100 million or more out the window for a fair fight unless that's their thing.

Is this the one where everyone fights on a station with 5 NPC corp guardian pilots?

Those who cannot keep up will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Come to Eifer Solar System, Gusandal or Hrondedir you will have as many fights as you like / can afford without blobing you.

All my posts are made shortly after Marihuana consumption.

I have tried highsec PvP.

Actually I just ganked a few Hulks. I would get the adrenaline rush real bad. But I mean, they were players, and I was a player as well. That works, right?

I'll see about some of the busier lowsec systems though, at this point I'd just like the opportunity to trade blows with something my size so that I have somewhere to start from.

confirming this

also, punisher is an extremely difficult ship to solo others in, ESPECIALLY without dying in the process. That, in addition to the recent ship/mod changes you are asking for a hard (possible rewarding) time.

I has all the eve inactivity

Go to NPC Null- a few months in there would do you good. Survive and fight solo in NPC Null and you will be able to fight anywhere.

Additionally, you might want to try atypical fits or asymmetrical tactics. If you go this route, you will find yourself limited to what you can engage, but you are already flying a punisher. So it's prob worth a try.

Amamake and the surrounding cluster have lots of frigs, but if you want a 1v1, you will need to prearrange that to ensure that is what you get, but there are plenty of people willing to 1v1 you in Amamake Big smile

If you are Amarr spec'd, I would also suggest trying a slicer and a crusader. Many of the frigate-populated low sec areas tend to favor pilots with the speed to dictate ranges in a fight. Speed can also allow you to engage outnumbered.

Good Luck

EDIT: You might also want to consider getting Fraps, frapsing your fights, and watching them afterwards to see what you did right and what you did wrong. <-Originally suggested to me by Liang Nuren

I should clarify. I called it the "Punisher Plan" because I read Taurean Eltanin's blog and thought it sounded like a good idea.

I'm actually using an Incursus, as a Gallente pilot.

Incursus is actually a fairly amazing ship...I'd put it on par with the rifter when fit/flown properly.

As has already been suggested, if you can't find fights in low-sec, try some high sec can flipping/baiting. Sure, ratting frigs and miners aren't tough in any way, shape, or form - but enough of them will fight back in their own inept way to provide some useful experience.

Also, when you hit the people who are baiting themselves, you'll get a good 1v1 fight, and win or lose you can learn from it.

Whether its high sec, low sec, or null sec though - make sure you do LEARN from your mistakes...don't just repeat them over and over.

I don't log in - I don't need to. My very existence griefs people. They see my name, and they instinctively fill with rage and indignation. Deny it all you want - but if you didn't care, you wouldn't have posted, would you?

With the rebalanced hybrids, an Incursus can be a deadly ship thanks to its dps. I haven't flown one against an active tank merlin (which typically causes rifters problems), but I imagine it would prob fair better than a rifter due to its deeps. Great pirate ship.

Agreed. They've become dangerous little ships.

@OP: Don't be too concerned about blobbing. Yes, it's gonna happen... that's why you're in a T1 frigate. As long as you stay out of the heavy blobbing systems, fit appropriately, and position yourself, it's really not too much an issue.

For instance; Amamake can be a little blobby. It's not just people afraid to fight solo; there's so many fighters in such a small area that the odds are someone's going to stumble across the fight. For this reason many T1 frigate fighters will favor kiting setups (artillery/rails/etc) so they have some GTFO ability in such areas.

Another method is drawing/luring your opponent to a more secluded location to fight. It's difficult to tell (via D-scan) if someone's at a belt or a planet when you're on the other side of a system, and I've found most pilots generally believe you're at the belt. Use this to your advantage.

Scenario: there's a T1 target at a belt. You warp to the belt at 100k. He's about 200-300k away from you. There's other ships in the system, and you'd rather fight him without interruption. To attempt to draw your opponent: align for a planet sitting by itself (if you warp to a cluster of planets and belts he won't know where you're going), allow the other pilot enough time to see where you're aligning to, then warping at your desired range to that planet. During your warp, drop your scanner range to 10k and set for 360-degrees and you get some advanced warning of who is warping to your spot. Once you drop out of warp, start aligning in case a gang lands.

Your target might show up... he might not. However, most of the time, if they're looking for a fight, I've found they will. I call it the 'Unspoken Duel'.

Informing people that you're out looking for a fight helps a great deal. Your bio is a fantastic tool for this, and all it takes is an entry at the top; "1v1 always honored" or "Always up for a T1 frig fight". Also, your ship name also can bring fights your way: something like 'Incursus Plan #4' will bring 'em in droves. Or simply "T1 frig Fight?", etc.

Get FRAPS. It is a massive help. Always give a GF even if they brought 10 ships to kill your frig. Never, ever, ever get upset over a ship loss. Talk to your opponent when you lose; you'd be surprised how many fighters will give advice and, occasionally, even tell you or link the fit you just faced. Talk to your opponent when you win.

Finally, stop being cautious. You must develop a killer's instinct. I know this sounds absolutely crazy; the mindset you engage with generally determines the outcome of the fight. If you're timid going into a fight, odds are it will go very poorly. I've fought players much younger with far less experience and skills... and lost... because my head wasn't right. I've also taken on insane odds and won, because I was in a 'howling for blood' mood.

And have fun. This would probably be the most important thing you can do. Good luck.
