Alcohol consumption from around the world.

Very interesting little chart. Some country's stats didn't really surprise me. Others made me do a double take. And some made me flat out question the accuracy of the data (Iceland, Japan... I thought you'd be heavier drinkers!!)

That is interesting I figured USA to be far higher. I thought Japan drank more, France was not #1 for wine though.

Alcohol has been around since before civilization.

In fact (according to the Discovery channel special on beer), beer (alcohol) was the single most important thing that caused people to settle in one place and develop societies as we know it today. The written language (again according to theory) came about purely as a need to record the sales of BEER.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Human history, civil evolution, and alcohol will forever be linked. And in moderation causes very little harm.

Yeah not to mention that the poison wine:

Reduces cholesterol
Maintains the immune system
Reduces coronary heart disease
Is loaded with antioxidants

But when you think about it, wine is merely fermented grape juice. Just like with beer which is made with wheat, barley, and water, many of the same ingredients that you find in bread. It's not the drink that is poison, it's the users rate of consumption.

Not to disagree, though it does make me wonder what accident lead to beer. Did some one have a clay pot full of grain, it rained, filled the pot. Someone forgot about it for a few days, then after it sat and started to stink someone said, "Hey, Let's drink that!" and they refined the process of how to make rotten grain, dirty water and yeast farts palatable.

I've similar questions about cheese, mmm rotten milk lumps, yum!

indeed, if drank in moderation, wine is actually quite healthy. A glass of red wine by lunch is quite healthy and many people recommend it.

I myself prefer green wine, but that's personal taste.

beer doesn't increase cholesterol or makes you fat btw, it's more the appetizers you eat with it. at most beer causes expanded bladder.P

quite interesting that my country is nº3 for wine consumption btw. thought we would be lower.

Exactly, beer actually helped me lose a decent amount of weight. Instead of getting up and buying fast food, or snacking... whenever I got hungry at home I drank a beer.

Just one mind you.

Lost 15 lbs in a couple months.

It's partly my fault as well. America used to be five places higher about 6-7 years ago but then I decided to dry up.

You know that guy just got accused of falsifying data? Fact is grapes do the same thing...

YAY USA not the number 1 alcoholics! This is what happens when you sell alcohol to 14 year olds... You got to make em earn it as a right of passage! Don't just let em buy it!
Damned if you didnt have to sneak it out your parents supply or find someone with a brother or sister that was 21. Also run like hell when the cops came cause you were underage.

Your point?

I still find it quite interesting how we have all taken to this poison.

Surely, you do not think wine and alcoholic drinks is the only source of this?

I take the occasional whiskey myself, or occasional beer/wine to my dinner. But alcohol is still a poison. As such I have made a conscious effort to reduce my intake these last years. I really have no need to be drunk, and much prefer to have my mind clear. So a glass of wine to my Sunday dinner, or a beer a Saturday afternoon while out with some friends is just dandy (but I tend to keep it to just one or two beers). I do not blame others if they want to drink as much as they want, they are free to do so as far as I see.

Still, it is curious that alcohol is a legal substance in our society, and so many other substances are not while it is clear that alcohol is more dangerous the some of them.

That's quite okay, because the Irish and those floppy-headed Canadians are sending us much better whiskey.
