OP, just want to say you are doing it right. Getting out there and trying it is the best way to learn how it works. Choosing an inexpensive T1 cruiser for your first excursion into losec was the right thing to do. Also, the Caracal is an excellent cruiser. With skills, it can take out a lot of ships that you wouldn't ordinarily try for.

Most of the advice given above is spot on. I also would not take the drake out to losec if I could not easily replace it with isk on hand. Save it for the hisec missions. Most folks won't bother suicide ganking it. Once you have your core fitting, missile, and shield tanking skills up, then you can consider tryng it. I would also recommend going with some trusty brosefs.

Your best friend in hostile k-space is not so much the d-scan, but local. D-scan is a good supplement. But won't tell you anything if they are in a cloaky recon or bomber. If you see anyone that is not blue to you in local, assume they want to kill you, and prepare to gtfo. That means actively aligned to either station, POS, or a safespot. I would also recommend you learn cloaking and fit at least a prototype cloak in your utility high-slot (for the Drake). Yes, that will gimp your lock time. But for PvE, that is not an issue.

On the Caracal, don't bother with a cloak. Its just not worth it.
