A few questions to toss,

Running Eve on Mint (oneiric 11.10), 32 bit

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor × 4 3.2Ghz

ATi HD6850 (I can see the eyes rolling now...)

Proprietary graphics installed

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.2.11399 Compatibility Profile Context
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.20
OpenGL extensions:
GL_AMD_multi_draw_indirect, GL_AMD_name_gen_delete,
GL_ARB_draw_indirect, GL_ARB_draw_instanced,
GL_EXT_copy_buffer, GL_EXT_copy_texture, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,


Using at the moment Wine 1.2.3 from the repo.


Using the normal instructions with winetricks and disabling jukebox etc.

It loads fine, no issues or crashes.

What I really want to know is any way of optimizing through Catalyst control?

Fiddling with in game graphics (as in lowering effects) does make it smoother when panning around. Asteroid belts tend to create a kind of short staggering lag.

I'm getting anywhere between 40- 50 fps depending where.what I'm doing.

Is this pretty normal? It just lacks that smoothness as in running in Windows, which I shouldn't really expect.

Will the latest Wine run it any better?

A few things get floated around like Gallium and s3tc which I'm not sure whether they are applicable to me or not.

Any thoughts?

1. use a more current version of wine ... 1.2 is OLD
2. Gallium3d will cook your card (crap power management)
3. I guess you are stuck :-)

I have a similar system (but 2xOpteron 2220 and HD 5830). EVE/Wine is CPU limited usualy.

Anyway, set LOD to high, post processing to Low or worse, texture detail to HIGH, AA you can also use. This will make a nice game with low load.
