Rookie ship improvements

As stated in the recent CSM notes, rookie ships will be getting a much needed remodeling so that new players start off in something that doesn't look like crap (except for the impairor of course, it's damn sexy). I was thinking about the new player experience, and how the rookie ships capabilities could be improved to help new players get a sense of the different things that can be done in Eve. T1 frigs are getting an overhaul soon anyway apparently, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the first ship a new player gets to use.

Give them 1 extra highslot, plus the ability to fit the Prototype Iris Probe Launcher (from the Zephyr), to allow people to try out exploration (the tutorial would be updated to exhibit this of course). So the ship starts with a gun, a mining laser, and an iris probe launcher. The limits on the powergrid and cpu would remain the same, so they wouldn't be overpowered with three highslots.

+50% capacitor capacity (for helping to get across large systems without running out of cap; it's not a good look.)

The addition of a 5% cargo size bonus per level, as they don't have a 2nd bonus and as the description says, they're used for basic trading.

This way players could try out more aspects of Eve right from the get-go and get a better feel of the game beyond shooting npc's and space rocks. Cool

People usually don't stray in the rookie ships too long, the tutorials are quick to hand the player a new ship and lay out the options as needed, rather than flooding them with options all at once.

Just my half a cent.

Unless of course you are redesigning T1 ships as a whole, which would have massive repercussions in PvP generally.

Rookie ships are free, and that is why they suck.

This isn't about making rookie ships suck less, it's about teaching newbies things. The problem is right now, newbies pretty much get directed towards missionrunning and unless they specifically do the tutorial don't know about anything else.

This is a simple, elegant solution to that. I like it.

All the starter tutorial teaches you is how to fly your ship, and defend yourself, to a limited extent, which is a constant no matter what you do - unless you want to try out trading and just do it all sitting in jita.

What then branches from that, are the more detailed specialities.
which the pathways you can pick - which is where you learn the other stuff, mining, probing, combat (as a speciality) or even advanced combat.

The rookie ship teaches you what you need to know and nothing else.

Don't quote me on this though, i have not done the tutorial in a while.

AND AGAIN, if someone is staying in the rookie ship for too long - of course they are limiting their experience, if they really want to learn other mechanics other than the base mechanics of flying and activating modules, or playing with the HUD/Market, they need to move on.

Newbie exploration sites in the starting areas of course Smile
A newbie incursion site was also proposed to get the players working together, which I thought was a great idea.

The other t1 frigates are much better at what they do, being more specialised, and there's nothing to stop players from doing that once they've built up some isk and skill. The changes I propose are for the tutorial and the first few hours of play thereafter. Rookie ships will still suck compared to others, but they'll be able to showcase more of what you can do in the game.

Oh, and t1 ships as a whole are being improved (frigs, cruisers, tier 1 BC's, destroyers have already been done), so hold on to your hat, mate.

I would rather they just do away with rookie ships entirely and start players out in a T1 frig instead. Along with that stop giving worthless rookie ships to players recently podded. I know it won't happen...but it is just what I would prefer.

I like the idea. Rookie Ships could use a buff or two.

FACT: I almost got ganked in Low-Sec because I ended up having to fly a Rookie Ship after someone blew up the Maller that they bought me. Fortunately, they didn't pod me.

The ironic thing is that I docked at the Pend Insurance Station, they gave me a free Rookie Ship, AND I insured the Maller that I got for free. It resulted in a Net Profit of 4 Million ISK, and of course I got most of my cheap Budget-Modules back after the guy I was PvPing with gave them back to me when we were both docked.

But yeah, I think Rookie Ships could use a minor buff.
