I got my start as a typical mission running newb, fast forward about nine months and my mission running has now given birth to a beautiful baby bo...boring as hell. I probably fell into the trap a lot of new players do listening to the "helpful," people in rookie chat and the NPC corp we land in. To make a long story short I have the ability to shot missiles fly t1 caldari ships and I can't for the life of me find a good pvp starter recommendation that fits my skills. I really want to go explode my way into pvp, but my first week or so of wreckless kestrel piloting in lowsec has taught me essentially nothing, except that the kestrel does really poorly against most other frigates I can find.

Plannin on signing up for one of the nullsec crash-course pvp alliance universities this weekend, but i'm honestly wondering what to show up in. The only frigate I can fly worth a damn is a kestrel and my experience thus far has been, it's made of paper, can't possibly fit a tank with my skills, and despite rockets being cool: cannot make the bad rifters stop touching me in my naughty places where they explode.

So basically just lookin for tips from the non-help-chat types that probably do some pvp. What should I do? Keep flyin the kestrel in all it's apparent lameness or train up some gunnery skills and hope the merlin turns out better for me despite having **** and balls for turret shooting skills? I would just do the suggested thing I read everywhere (train the rifter), but after plugging away at caldari skills for almost a year it seems shameful to abandon them now.

Much appreciated.

Merlin is a good choice for beginners but requires high fitting skills to use with an MWD and Blasters.

If you want Caldari PvP the Drake is always a good choice to aim towards. With small Missile Skills the Caracal is a passable Frigate killer with Assault Missile Launchers.

I would honestly say go for Drake because the T1 Ships outside of Tackle Frigates are not that great. Drakes are very common so you will get in fleets with them and have low training requirements.

I would aim for this:
[Merlin, New Setup 1]

Micro Auxiliary Power Core I

Medium Shield Booster II
Small Capacitor Booster II, Navy Cap Booster 400
Experimental 1MN Afterburner I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I

Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Rocket Launcher II, Caldari Navy Trauma Rocket
Rocket Launcher II, Caldari Navy Trauma Rocket

Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I

Gives you alot of useful skills and it´s a very good fit.

(Serious) When you're looking to move up from a frigate you might want to look at a Moa with the recent Null changes. Also check out Kil2's Moa PvP vid.

Actually in some near future Cerberus might well become something every fleet/gang will want. Frigs got a very nice boost lately and should take now an important role in fleets, hell might as well see from now real tackle for blaster boats to perform as they should (yes tackle always existed but no one wants to target=pouf in one second)

Bombers fleets are annihilating entire fleets of battleships. The only counter to those is either another bombing fleet or a lot of luck they suck, but chances you have that under your hand at the right moment are very thin most probably close to 0.

This is where Navy Caracals or regular Caracals but much better the Cerberus can make your fun sniping those and pop them like popcorn thanks to his long range performance and speed spewing missiles that DON'T HAVE TRACKING ISSUES.

Plus this ship in a decent shield logistics fleet with HM's of T2 lights (because sign rad explo) can just be the nightmare of every logistics/reccon on the field. Why?
-Missiles take time to travel:yes
Does this makes the drake bad? -no
-Never miss:yes
-Kinetic advantage: +25% kin dmg > any dmg type in whatever resist hole in pvp

Last but non least advantage: no one expects to see this beast on the field since many didn't understood the capital role of this ship and most fc's don't even try it, those who do can tell you how efficient this spewing beast is as bomber/interdictor/tackler/logistics/reccon killer is.

With Calamari cruiser 5 and some other skills you can also field some of the most important ships for gangs/fleets everyone will suck you to come: Falcons, Rooks
Then Basilisks, a pure fleet shield logistics monster that has only the cap stability as weakness that can be countered easily

Thanks for the input mates, i've decided to train up my gunnery skills a while so I can rock a proper merlin.
