T2 Drone Upgrade Modules - Concealed Disadvantage?

So after training Drone Navigation V to fit the tech 2 drone nav computer, it seems that drone sharpshooting V will be needed as well for the Omni tracking link II.

Can training these two skills, and especially sharpshooting have a negative impact on drone damage, because of tracking mechanics and optimal mechanics?

Also, is it confirmed that drone nav skill and the module affect ONLY the flying speed, and not orbit speed?

I cannot give an answer on this suffice to say that there has always been a "truemour" surrounding drone speed and tracking. Hopefully someone will either have a dev answer on this or it'll get blue-tagged.

Neither one effects damage directly.

Drones orbit within their optimal. So Sharpshooting only increases damage when the target is roughly the speed of the drone and they don't stay in their orbit. Or when your using sentry drones.

Navigation is both. It lets your drones get in range and start hitting sooner, so slightly higher dps.
But it has to be the most often broken skill. They have fixed, and broken it quite a few times. When its broken it hurts dps by increasing orbit speed.

it is not possible for increased optimal range to negatively impact your drones' performance

No. Anything within optimal will hit for full damage providing there is sufficient tracking so there is no downside to increasing optimal by training Drone Sharpshooting.

Years ago, Drone Navigation had a notable negative effect on hit quality due to poor tracking from the increased speed, but I haven't seen this come up for a very long time.

If you have high skills, and fit a couple of drone navigation computers, and also fit some drone speed rigs you will find that your small drones can have trouble settling into an orbit - they will overshoot the target, then they will reverse and overshoot it again, etc.

I got to try this lol

I've read somewhere before that Drone Navigation only affects drone MWD speed, and not actual orbital speed.
However, I've also read that heavy drones MWD all the time.

I'm unsure of both of those statements, and am also intrigued on knowing more.

It actually affects MWD thrust now, not speed, resulting in faster acceleration and better speed with mwd.
It used to be just speed, which broke tracking in orbit; now it's thrust, resulting in small drones over-accelerating and overshooting targetLol

Sharpshooting will not have an impact - if a drone is within optimal it will hit based on the usual parameters (mainly tracking vs angular velocity of the target)

Drone navigation - may cause drones to marginally overshoot in some situations but this is very very rare - and more than compensated by the increase in drone survivability and in damage output (the sooner they get to their target the sooner they do their thing).

So don't worry about training these things up. Drone performance will be better for it.

NB: If you want to test it - just load up a ship with nav computers and see how the boost to speed does to your drones.
