Mission Strategy?

I've been doing a lot of lvl 3 missions lately (mostly with a Myrmidion) and when I warp in there are in a lot of cases 3 seperate swarms. Should I attach the closest one first or the farthest? Most of the time the farthest ones are usually at my turrets optimal range so I pick them off first. But when I finish with them the closest ones are now about 2 or 3K from my ship so my turrets can't hurt them. In addition, it seems that my drones are attacking the same enemies I target with my turrets. It would be great if I could get them to attack the closer ones while I pick off the farther ones with my turrets. Its like my drones have a mind of their own and just randomly go after what I lock my turrets on. Also, I can't seem to figure out how to create distance from the closer ones so I can get them into my turrets optimal range. The only option I have found is to select orbit to something like 20 or 30K but that doesn't work very well most of the time because I think my BC is too slow to get any distance from my target. I realize there has to be a better stradegy as I warp in.What? I just can't get a grasp on the mechanics of the whole battle senario. Any advise would be very much appreciated.

You can tell your drones to attack specific targets by selecting that target, and then selecting the drone (or group of drones), right clicking and hitting engage target. Most people create a short cut key for "drones attack" and "drones Return". This makes it much easier command drones (which need a lot of commanding, because their AI is not the best).

To create shortcut keys, you have to hit escape, and its in one of the tabs (google it for instructions, I don't remember of the top of my head)

Groups in missions often aggress separately, and in tougher missions the order of groups that you aggress can be important for limiting the amount of incoming damage.

Here is the most common guide to running missions... although it often makes missions easy... and takes much of the surprise out of running them:

Fire on the closer ones

Even if your optimal is at 20km you can still hit things that are at 10km (disregarding tracking and sig radius)

When you shoot the closer ones then you can get aggro from the rats and the drones will attack automatically provided that they are set to aggressive and they will continue attacking ships that are "red boxed" to you.

Usually i would shot the closest ones first.
As mentioned your dornes can be set to target what ever you like using the drone window.

I suggest piloting away from the closest group so the ships pilot directly towards you. Since there transversal is low you should eb able to hit them and hit them hard. Once they get to close and you start missing shoot the next closest group if they are already shooting you(don't **** em off until your ready).

I always shoot frigates first because they may have a warp scrambler on them(unsure if they do in 3's). This also gets them before they can set up an orbit around me...once that happens my guns can't hit them.

Skills like motion prediction also help.

Can also use modules to enhance tracking or webbifier mods to slow em down.

1. Find the optimum location to engage the nearest swarm (look around after warp, because some group(s) can be behind you!). There's no universal rule for that. You should pick a place free from any obstacles, the rest depends on situation. Flank if needed, but avoid drawing other groups attention.
2. Slip near the enemy sight/targetting boundary to get aggro from few enemies. When they start yellowboxing, hit the MWD and move away from that group. Yellowboxed enemies will follow you. Pull them as far as you can to the chosen location, firing at them on the way (you may need to tank). Hold on with first round untill the group following you is far enough from the rest of the baddies or they also join the party.
3. Unleash the drones and kill those who followed you. Use light, fast drones on frigates/destroyers and medium, slower ones on other ships (you should have two types of drones in your Myrm). Warriors are recommended for frigates.
4. Repeat.

This recipe may not work in all situations. Adjust tactics accordingly.

If your ship draws too much attention during slipping, you can try something I call "drone pulling". It's risky and rarely works, but it's worth trying if you can't see any other option. This however should be considered the last resort as it takes much more time to pull off. It goes like this:

1. Choose one drone and say goodbye to it. It should be a medium one.
2. Launch it and attack the nearest enemy. When baddies start shooting at your drone, recall it or send her at some distant, separated target (I'm using enemy sentry guns for that). Enemies that were attacking your drone MAY follow it for a bit and they CAN stay where they stop or they CAN get back to the previuos location.
3. Repeat that as many times as needed until the separated group of enemies will be far enough from the initial blob.
4. Take aggro and kill them the usual way.

You will probably lose that drone. Also, drones pull only small bunch of enemies, so use it wisely.

" When they start yellowboxing, hit the MWD and move away from that group."

This is the main thing I can't seem to understand. The only way I know of "moving away" is to highlight some object in the system and select "approach" and then hit my MWD. This is probably a real stupid question but is there another way of moving your ship other than selecting something in the general direction and distance you want to go in order to get away from close enemies. The only other way I know of moving away is to orbit the target at a greater distance than they are from your ship. If my ship is stopped and I select my MWD without selecting a destination how do I know which direction my ship will go? What I mean is how do I "steer" to somewhere without selecting a destination to approach? Sorry if all seems convoluted but I can't think of another way of describing my dilemma.Ugh

double click an empty area of space and your ship will fly towards it.

thats called manual navigation. Yes when I found out about it my head exploded too.

Also in the future you can use manual navigation to cut down on enemy transveral.

If your flying a gun boat. Use right click look at on an enemy. posittion the camera squarely on there rear and double click right above or below them and your ship will match there heading. Whoop, transversal drops and you can hammer them with your big guns.

Does not work on frigates.
