Some flashy red lunatic in a Thrasher (bizarrely, armed with lasers) just shot at my shuttle as I was about to jump through a gate in a 0.9 system. All I was carrying was 1 x Adaptive Nano Plating 1.

Presumably he got blown up by CONCORD ( I didn't jump back through to find out!).

What exactly is the point of doing something like that?

Either

a) He thought you might've been carrying something tiny and valuable in the shuttle. People occasionally transport boosters or blueprints in shuttles, or

b) He was t1-fit and thus the ship was basically free, so he didn't care if he exploded as long as he got to weird people out with his lazerthrasher.

Just a thought that could be relevant:

If you board an empty ship, that ship must have an original owner - so are you effectively stealing and therefore giving the original owner shooting rights?

Alternatively he was just new and did not know what would happen if he randomly shot at someone in hi-sec.

Guess he does now Big smile

Well, there are times (too much blood in a caffeine or vice versa, full moon, loud kids outside, ...) when for some reason you just push the wrong button... or few of them at once...

So, as I was one jump out from a trade hub, he was probably just 'rolling the dice' in the hope that I was carrying something valuable.

One more thing occurs to me: as I understand it, to be flashy red his sec status must have been -5.0 or below. So how come he was in a 0.9 system? I thought outlaws were shot at by local security forces.

Not necessarily. Anyone who shoots you will become red to you (unless they are in your player corp). Smart empire pirates are very careful with their sec rating. It's entirely possible he had 5.0 sec status and shot you, then becoming red.

He could have also only been there for a few seconds. Just because you're shot on sight by the police doesn't mean you can't go kill stuff in that space. FW people do it all the time in the opposing side's space.

He was red and flashing before he fired and only sub -5.0 outlaws are set to flash in my overview.

He might've warped fast enough from the station to avoid the navy (not sure if this is possible), or gotten the ship from an alt in an Orca.

People who are agressable by you (say, a logistic ship repairing the war target you are shooting at) will show up as if they have <-5 security status (that thing doesn't seem to be at fault here though).

Concord isn't who comes after when you have a low sec status.

He saw you were a new player and wanted to troll you.

Theres a video of a goon in and around jita in a throw away thrasher killing frigates and pods just because he wanted to induce tears.

Dont ever doubt the sadistic drive of other players to ruin your game as a motive.

You may have noticed that you are in a cooperation. Not a guild, clan, troll band or what not. As with all cooperations they only cooperate with associates. You are a competitor. Be prepared to see competitors to step in you way as hard as they see fit.
