Null sec can be quite boring. For any new players, or players that have not ventured out of high sec that may come as a surprise but it can be dull. In fact if you are part of a null sec alliance then as long as you keep an eye on Intel and local you are probably safer than in high sec, and the rewards in ratting, PI etc (or whatever grind you do to make ISK) is worth more, although the logistics of getting it out the high sec to sell are sometimes challenging.

Joining in the big fleet fights can be OK, as much as a tidi blighted, 1000+ person slow motion battle where someone tells you who to shoot, what to shoot and when to shoot can be fun. but sometimes, just sometimes there is a thing in me that wants to wander off on my own or with a group of 2 or 3 others and just roam looking for a decent PVP fight. And despite my lengthy forward that is what this is about.

the TL:DR is where can I base myself to get the best chance of solo/small gang PVP action?

Bare in mind that i do not want to leave where i am and join another corp, I just want a place I can drop a JC and have a few ships set up so when I get that urge to wander i have a good chance (as I know nothing is guaranteed) to find a fight as a guy running solo or 2 or 3 guys running together.

Put a JC in Thera.

If you don't get a fight there then pick a wormhole to somewhere interesting - Signal Cartel used to (maybe still do) have a website with the current wormholes & destinations. I used it for small gang (5 or 6) roams a couple of years back & it worked out pretty well.

You may want to rethink your decision to give in to those destructive, nonconformist primal urges and instead just shut up and join the fleet.

That being said - have you tried Syndicate?

You are iin the wrong alliance. Fidelas Constans are known to be hard working to blue everyone in EVE. Change the alliance Cool

Provi may be the top, or close to the top, PVP space right now for solo/small gang engagements. There is a high population with a variety of players, not just null-bears. If you are red to Provi and you wander around either with a small group or solo, then the various pockets will see you coming from intel and put together a defense fleet for you to have some content.

There was a decent fight in XHQ on Monday night that involved approx. 1200 pilots. Some Dreads and Carriers exploded and PL V CVA was a gudfite..

The TIDI was quite a treacle laden feast though and F1 key thoroughly abused.

HED-GP often provides a fight also.

As stated here. The fights are out there. And Provi space seems to be a good place to pick up strong pvp skills. There are some very, VERY good roaming pilots that will be glad to kill you multiple times. Not only that but you can find some very large scale conflicts as well.

This sounds quite interesting, what is the market like in Thera (if indeed there is a market) or do you have to go out too high sec for it

Go to FW low sec. I realy do not know better place to get the fight quickier. Especially if you fly some non-popular frigate like Maulus Navy Issue and have security status +5. ;) I rearely wait more than 2-5 minutes till some pirat comes on me. Unfortunately with slow boat like MNI they also most likely run away, so you will never get a kill. But you will get a fight ;)

It was OK, bit expensive but not bad. Dunno about now as I'm not currently playing. Its childsplay to get a couple of transports through from empire anyway.

You have to be aware that solo and small gang pvp is very artificial and unrealistic, and that it only occurs when folks agree to the rules of engagement beforehand.

So, you have duelling mechanics for 1v1 solo pvp. And you have the alliance tournament for small gang battles that won't turn into blobs.

You ought not get frustrated (as I did for a while in FW) with the game mechanics as they exist. The game evolved under pressure from folks who badly wanted to win, and who were diligent in making sure they brought their firepower to bear on engagements.

So this means folks learned to use off grid links, they learned to use multiple computers to bring extra ECM support and logi, and of course they learned to network and join with others to assist with overwhelming numbers at short notice.

The players didn't develop all these "unfair" techniques because CCP can't design a space shooter game. On the contrary, CCP designed a space shooter that envisaged such romantic notions as "Heavy Assault Frigates", "EWAR cruisers" and tech 1 logistics ships. What happened was that CCP put forward a bunch of tools, and the player base decided to ambush each other and utterly smash and destroy their enemies with the tools, using the most unfair methods they could devise.

Not because they wanted to make Eve an unfair experience, but simply because they didn't want to lose. They wanted desperately to win.

If you want to fight a fair fight, duelling and alliance tournament are the way to go. Personally, I am interested in small gang fights that don't turn into blobs. I wish the game was 80% alliance tournament events and 20% Facebook for space nerds.

But I want a pony, too.

We take the world as we find it, and the Eve universe would not be what it is if folks were not allowed to be desperate in their will to win combat.

Either find an alliance next door to casual pvp reds and neuts (aka, get away from the blue donut), and/or have JC's in fw space for unlimited solo/small gang pew.

"Your security status has been lowered." - Hell yeah it was!
