How to counteract jamming

I tried ratting in caldari space in a rifter.

Instead of killing them, they jammed me preventing me from targeting anything and forced me to leave after flying around being able to do nothing.

I fitted some improvements to my sensors but it didn't work. If I wanted sensor booster I, i'd have to give up some of my tank so......any advice?

I've taken to ratting in my Venture via drones so....yeah, it sucks a bit, but it works.

Some things that can help:

- Drones
-Auto targeting / FoF missiles ( these have some drawbacks so learn how to use them )
-Scripted sensor booster
-Jam them back

If you know which NPC will jam you or get a break between jams you can use sensor dampeners to shorten the range of the NPC and longer range weapons for yourself and then stay out of the reduced targeting range of the NPCs.

Keep in mind that a faction's ships are typically ideally set up to deal with local rats. Meaning that Minmatar ships should be best against Angels and Caldari ships best against Guristas etc... Minmatar ships have the weakest sensor strength in game and Caldari ships typically have more sensor strength and range( 11 for Caldari frigates versus 8 for the Mini frigates ).

If you are determined to stay alpha and live in Caldari space you could try the Breacher. It can hold 2 small drones, uses missiles and has more range than the rifter.

Read this EVE University guide, scroll down to "Countering ECM: Electronic Counter Counter-Measures (ECCM)" for a list of modules and skills you can install / train to reduce the effectiveness of jamming on yourself.

Unfortunately, you're being jammed by NPC pirates, and the scripts that the NPC's use are optimized to not put a lot of load on the EVE servers, which means that:

1. The NPC's cheat and have much higher jamming strength, so the skills and modules won't help that much.
2. NPC's don't coordinate (fairly) so if the mission has 4-5 frigates that COULD jam you, they'll all jam you, and end up chain-jamming you.

You need to figure out which NPCs jam you and take those out ASAP. If you manage to lock or get your drones out and set them to aggressive BEFORE the NPCs jam you, they'll go after them even after you're jammed.

For destroyers Minmatar has the Talwar which has more launchers and 1 more point of sensor strengths than either of the T1 combat frigates ( Rifter or Breacher ).

You could try a Cruiser as the Bellicose has 14 base sensor strength.

The Fleet Issue Vigil has a 13 base sensor strength.

Also keep in mind that the NPCs only have a chance to try and jam you and then a chanced based success after that. So you can always burn out of range to get them to drop target and then burn back in to re-establish target on them and try to get some more done before you get jammed again.

My original main character is Mimatar and my solution to the Guristas jamming problem was to move to Amarr space and fight Sanshas.

Hopefully something that I posted winds up being helpful to you.

Are you Alpha or Omega?

Train up your targeting skills.if you haven't done that yet, it will help you resist sensor jamming.

Auto Targeting System. It's a high slot active module that will try to get a target lock on any ship that is hostile to you and is inside your targeting range.
Sensor Amplifier. It's a low slot passive module that makes your ship's normal sensors stronger and more resistant to jamming.

Both of these modules should be useable by Alphas and have low minimum skill requirements.

An alternative is auto-target light missiles, but I'm not sure an Alpha can train into those.

Auto-target missiles do not require you to get or keep a sensor lock on a target, BUT the target MUST be doing something hostile to you for auto-target missiles to work. Auto-target missiles will attack any ship that is doing something hostile to you even if you have not locked it as a target. The down side is that auto-target missiles do less damage than normal missiles of the same size/type AND if you have several hostile ships inside your missile range that you have not locked, the missiles will decide for themselves which ship they will attack.

If you have locked a ship as a target, you can fire auto-target missiles at it just like any other type of missile.

Auto-target missiles are only available as light, heavy and cruise missiles. There are no auto-target versions of rockets, heavy assault missiles or torpedos. Auto-target missiles can be fired from the normal version of the missile launcher (light, heavy or cruise missile launcher).

A Rifter is not the best missile frigate from Minmatar, it can only fit two missile launchers. A Breacher would be a better choice for a missile ship, it can fit three missile launchers and has four mid slots so you could fit a stronger shield tank to it.

One other option is to not try ratting NPC's that jam your sensors, such as Serpentis and Guristas rats. Both of them are known to use sensor EWAR.

Ah....well that was enlightening.

Yes i'm an alpha and I think I fitted a sensor amplifier once but got jammed anyway. (I think it was an amplifier I)

I'll look into those ships and see if I can apply your suggestions or come up with my own kludged together solution.

Right now being entirely reliant on drones works but tends to result in me having to hit and run due to my Venture getting shot at a lot. Hopefully testing those ideas out ends up with a success.

Thanks guys!

Both Caldari and Minmatar have the largest limitations for ships that carry drones. The Slasher and Rifter cannot carry/use drones at all. Out of the Minmatar frigates an Alpha can use, the Probe can handle the most drones but the Probe is a specialised exploration ship and should be used for ratting fairly carefully. The two Minmatar destroyers also cannot use drones at all.

You start getting some reasonable drone options for Minmatar at the cruiser level, but Minmatar combat cruisers are somewhat specialised in terms of which types of weapons work well on them and how to fly them to make the most of their weapons. The Stabber is a fast and agile cruiser that is normally used with autocannon. The Rupture cruiser is more suited to long range artillery. The Belicose is the main missile cruiser for Minmatar with the Scythe Fleet Issue also having missile capabilities. All of these cruisers have drone capabilities.

There is one battlecruiser that any Alpha can fly, the Gnosis. This ship can be fitted with any weapon system in the game and has moderate drone capabilities.

Keep in mind that if you are not able to target the NPCs then there really is not a reason to be in target range. Fit a prop mod to get out of range and out of incoming damage if you are relying on your drones to do all the work anyway. With the right fit you should be able to out range pretty much any belt rat and get to a point where you take no damage.

Just keep in mind that at some point ( usually around 250 Km from engagement point for belt rats ) the NPCs will reset themselves and head back to where you first engaged them. At that point they will be far more likely to target your drones. So you might want to literally run circles around the NPCs to keep them somewhat near where you first engaged them.

You need to look for mid (better) and lowslot modules increasing your sensor strength also the sensor compensation skills help.

Countering Ewar from Uniwiki

Frigates are easy to jam due to low sensor strength and Gurista npcs are notoriously annoying, if you fight against npcs with ewar, make sure you note which ones are the jamming ones and kill them asap.
Also Minmatar ships have lowers sensor strengths from all races afaik.
