From in-game, you should hit ESC to open the game's control panel, and under Keyboard Shortcuts set up a shortcut (ctrl b?) for bookmarks. That way you can just hit that whenever you want to create a safespot, including while you're in-warp mid-way between two planets.

You can also bookmark a wreck by right-clicking on it. Right-click menu is context-sensitive and has many options that aren't always available in the regular interface.

If you create wrecks during a mission, then go talk to the agent to complete the mission, all of the mission stuff (ships, stations, asteroids, clouds, etc.) disappear, but the wrecks remain for 2 hours, so with a bookmark you can return in a salvage destroyer and tractor/loot them all. I always bookmark a wreck in each pocket in a mission, before moving on. I name it with the time, so I know when the 2 hours are up, too.
