Shield module questions..

Sorry if this has come up before, but forum searching wasn't as much help as I'd hoped...

Perhaps it's just that the game is still new to me, but I'm having a hard time understanding which shield module is best under what circumstances.

When fitting out a ship for missions or (WH exploring), especially now that I'm getting ready to move from L3 missions to L4s, I'm not sure what makes a Shield Booster/Recharger/Flux Coil/etc better, under what circumstances.

Of course I know that some are in different slots, I'm trying to grasp which are more effective for which situations, ...or is just a matter or personal preference whether you use Extenders/Hardeners vs Boosters/Rechargers.

I'd like to be smart about fitting ships, but when I look at some of the fittings on UniWiki, I don't understand why they used one module over another. I've tried lots of fits, and I think they're all starting to run together in my mind at this point.

The reason is, I'm just about ready to move into L4s. My strongest skills are in Missiles and Drones . Most of my other experience and skills thus far have been built around shield tanking.

Any advice or a "Rule of Thumb" would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

General rule of thumb: unless you can fit oversized buffer and still have room for SPRs in the lows and purgers in the rigs you're better off active tanking. That more or less precludes battleships from passive tanks (except for maybe a Rattlesnake). Even when you think you CAN give up lows/rigs, there are often better options (damage, application) when running missions.

About the only time I seriously consider a fully passive fit these days are when I know I'm going to face exceptional neuting (which is to say, Serpentis 6/10). A buffer fit with some recharge can be adequate, but you have to know how much damage you can mitigate and how much is too much.

+1, for l4s an active tank is just going to be a better option because you need fewer slots for an active tank.
