What's the rule for calculating how much money per jump should be paid

Hello everyone,

Alpha clone here who joined the game only a few days ago. I have a question regarding making courier contracts. I have a small stack of ore which I need moved to a local 10 jumps away from its current solar system. I would like to get some insights on the following matters:


  • How to get an idea of the total amount of money the ore I want moved is worth
  • How to calculate the collateral
  • How to calculate how much ISK should be paid per jump in relation to the cargo size and expected route
  • Whether or not is possible to hire a company instead of a player to haul the ore for me

Use http://evepraisal.com/ to determine the value of your shipment. You can also use the estimate button to set the collateral

Use the "Haulers Channel" in chat to find a courier. Companies that haul for a living include Red Frog http://red-frog.org/jumps.php and Pushx https://www.pushx.net/

In highsec you will generally pay by the jump regardless of M3 up to 1 billion in value. Over 1 billion is considered a high risk contract and can be a lot more expensive http://black-frog.red-frog.org/jumps.php

In lowsec/nullsec you will generally be charged per M3.

For a small stack of ore, consider compressing it in a nearby Citadel (it's free and reduces volume 100:1) and haul it yourself.

Your absolutely right Do Little.

Here is a little secret I didn't even realize I was missing. If you mining away from home, offload ore at a local citadel, and mine your heart out. When done compact ore, this blew my mind when I stopped and thought about it, compacted ore and ice will still go into a ore hold! Can you imagine hauling 500,000 m3 in a speedy lil venture, 1,500,000 in a innocent looking Skiff, 3,5oo,ooo m3 in a lonely passing Mackinaw.

I haven't put too much work into it except when I mine ice for hours and then compact it for easy transport home, no hauler no extra trips, just start jumping for the home with a ore hold a full days work fitting into one ship one trip.

No cuts, no butts, no coconuts!

In high sec, for a public contract, 500k per jump as payment will get the contract taken almost instantly. Otherwise, in general, if you're making courier contracts, if you split the pile of ore (or compressed ore) into chunks that will fit into the various transports (60k m3 for a T2 transport, 17k m3 for a T1), your contract will be filled faster.

If you decide to haul it yourself, keep in mind that it takes approx. 1-2 million ISK worth of destroyers to suicide-gank a T1 industrial transport in high-sec, and maybe in the 10 million range to gank a T2 transport that has resistances, so if your compressed ore is worth more than that, you'll be a relatively big target when you approach Jita or other such crowded areas.

EDIT: Otherwise for pricing:

Right-click the ore and either view market details or reprocess it, just to look at the prices, and then cancel out of the market / reprocessing window once you've seen the value of the stack of ore.

Collateral should be 1.2 - 1.5 x the value of the ore.

Payment should be as indicated above by Do Little; typically 400 - 500k per jump in high-sec, and if you're transporting between market hubs, set your autopilot to "use the safest route, avoid lowsec" and plot the route yourself to see how many jumps.

I didn't even know one can compress ore, nor what citadels were for.

Citadels are player own stations, and have a handy feature that isn't in NPC stations, the ability to compress ore and ice. If you go on a long range mining trip, and need a place to unload and can enter it use it. Compressing ore is free, and make it so much easier to work with and transport.
