IN terms of non- industrial or market based reasons- why do some players multi-box characters?

Do they run two at the same time simply to have one scout ahead? or, What type of player would get the most use from more than one account open on screen at a time? (obviously I assume that those with multi-boxing are paid accounts, and are actively playing both (so not cheating or using bots which violate rules)

I used to do a lot of high-sec mining for example, and i would have two miners and a hauler...so from taht perspective i can see the use, and "need".

Cynos, mining, zombie SP farms, specialized toons you want to have one alt-tab away instead of relogging... also possible to box pvp, especially if alts sit in capitals and it's a time diluted blob fight.

"actively playing" not really possible, your apm is divided and it's too easy to make mistakes when toons are in different systems (or other alliances in opposite parts of the universe heh). But... what's the difference between "actively" mining on one toon and "actively" mining on 10? 5 apm doesn't match my definition of active

Hi there,

There are a few reasons that come to mind based:

  1. Specialisation - Many characters focusing on a single activity or similar activities do better than one character who can barely do many things.

  2. Logistics (or characters that help each-other) - This can be as simple as scouting for your freighter, lighting a cyno for your capital and so on.

  3. Isk per hour - If the task is simple enough that you can do it with multiple Omega pilots at once, you can make more isk per hour.

There will be many other reasons but these were the first ones that came to mind.

PVE:
PI, mining, etc... scales up really well with multiple characters
Certain sites (high class wormholes, for example) require more than one character to complete, but are not so tough that a single ship needs your complete undivided attention.

PVP:
Scouts, eyes, scanners, extra dps. For example, I'll have my alt scan down a target in a cloaky ship, sneak up and tackle him, then I bring my main with the big guns for the kill.

Instead of having to go thru recruiting other miners for a mining corp, build your own mining fleet of multiboxxed chars. You avoid getting spied on internally as well.

There's marketing where you place multiple buy and sell entries where you can control the flow of items to your liking.

Manufacturing! Multiple baked items overnight, to be sold into the market the next day.

Planetary interaction, harvest more items, etc etc.. (although its a click-a-thon when you get more and more planets).

There is a ton of replayability when you introduce alts into your gameplay.

There are so many reason that there is no way all of them will be listed here. I think the main point however is that if you don't currently see a need to have one then you shouldn't get one. No need to sub multiple accounts just because other players are. That being said I'll list a few reason that I haven't seen thus far.

-Cloaky eyes on a gate or wormhole
-Have one character sitting in fleet waiting for action while other is off doing something else.
-Provide buffs to yourself, for example you could have one character sensor boosting another while sitting on a gate so that you could have near instant lock times while gate camping.
-Provide reps / dps for sites like 10/10s or level 5 missions, burner mission, etc.. that are difficult to solo.
-PvE on one while moving a Freighter around on the other
-Spywork
-Intel gathering

I am sure that there are many more but this is just a short list I could think of quickly.

When I started I had just one account - then my son joined me.

The 'MMO' part of EVE means that a goodly number of the spaceship-shaped groups of vari-coluored pixels are actually real people you can interract and work with.

But the ones you work with are not always online - and then a handy 'friend' (for any and all of the reasons already posted) is just so damn useful.

I'm pretty hardcore and there's that part of me that would really like to see EVE players having just one character on just one account (that's the 'RPG' bit).

And then still that 'friend' would be, oh so, handy.Blink

Don't soil your panties, you guys made a good point, we'll look at the numbers again. - CCP Ytterbium

Scouting is my primary reason for having both accounts simultaneously logged in.

Also when I'm active wardeccing and structure bashing (something I haven't done for a while), two accounts take down a structure much faster than one.
