People selling for just above the buying price

Hey,

So I have been into EVE for some time, but just recently got involved in full-time trading.

I am sort of confused about the purpose of some people posting sell offers that are literally 0.01 ISK above the highest buying offer. Is this more of a large-scale deliberate action that's supposed to trick unexperienced traders into posting a lower sell offer such that the value of an item is significantly decreased (what might be the intent of the trader posting the original sell offer)?

Because to be honest I just always buy all of the items that are offered by such a person, because very often it's just profitable to sell them immediately at the normal price.

Am I missing something here?

Here is a screenshot of what I mean (all other selling offers are around 1.186 mil ISK):

Sorry, I am a noob, but this looks like a good place to ask : how do you place a "sell" offer ? Like, if I have something rare which I want to sell, and I don't wanna use the "sell this" command because the station price is too low. I see a button to place "buy orders" (not sure what this does btw), but not the equivalent to sell.

Thanks and sorry for derailing your post a bit

There could be a variety of reasons. In this case, both orders could be placed by the same player - hoping someone will undercut their sell order which will automatically fill their buy order.

To sell an item, simply right click and choose sell this item. To sell to a buy order select immediate.

Ok, I see. Though me buying all of their items is going to be a loss for them no matter what. To be honest it seems pretty pointless and risky to set up a 50 mil ISK sell offer (this was initially 50 units in case of the item from the screenshot) just to fill up your buying order considering that that somebody who trades with at least, let's say, 100 units would probably have enough common sense not to undercut the offer and lose about 20 mil ISK, but rather just buy the low-priced items. I mean it's not only high-risk, but also if you are trading only 50 items you could certainly just wait a little bit until your buy order fills up.
Unless there is a major point that I'm missing, I still think it's really not worth it to post an offer like that.

Unless you were watching the buy orders, you don't know how well the strategy worked. It's possible that there was originally a 0.01 ISK spread and the players buy order was filled before you noticed it.

It's also possibly this person thought they were selling to a buy order but forgot to select immediate - the buy order cleared and what you see are the leftovers. Hard to say for sure.

As for people actually paying attention - if you (or your bot) are managing 50 orders and repricing them every 5 minutes, you can make a mistake. Not my idea of fun but each to their own.

You do use the "sell this" command. If you change the timeframe from Immediate you can then input a price of your own to post a sell offer.

Yeah that perhaps could be the case. It just sometimes throws me off as I just always buy those people's items.

Well it's not overly exciting, but I can't seem to maintain an income from PVP for now so my alt has to do something :)

Not just possible, but almost certain. It happens all the time that people sell to the value that they see is the possible buy value, and some part of their order remains unfilled.
It is unlikely that what you are seeing was planned as a scam attempt or similar.

As Areeen indicates, all values you see in any sell interface or buy interface are just default suggestions, and can be changed by you to accomodate your targets. And that goes for the sell and buy prices, and the time frames and the ranges of your orders. You can manipulate them all.

So don't be afraid to push those buttons, but then read carefully what the interface suggests that your order should be, until you get the hang of it.

Thank you very much. I think I got it now, had forgotten about this "immediate" button.
