Can we fix this?

As someone with a mild degree of how this should look in space it feels like I'm widening the filed of view but the ships aren't being affected. This mix of effects just makes it feel like the nebula is 1000 km in front of my ship instead of 50 light years away. Zooming in and out (moving the camera back without adjusting the field of view) should make the nebula/starmap background remain static. Why would the view look noticeably different when looking at something 50 lightyears away vs 50 lightyears + 500km?
