EVE Launcher is now blocking non-steam logins

After the latest EVE Launcher update any accounts created and used which where not tired to the steam client version of the game are being denied access to the game.

"we were unable to log you in with your Steam account. If you have just purchased the game through Steam, Please try again in a few minutes. If you added the game as a non-Steam game, please launch the game directly instead of launching it through Steam."

What this means to those who have lost there steam account version of eve online...

  • No support for steam overlay for those who own the game but don't have a steam account connected.
  • No access to the game for those who do not have access to the steam client.

  • Because of these events I am reevaluating playing EVE Online after 638 hours. This change has seriously damaged my ability to play the game.

After speaking to a GM about possibly merging accounts unfortauntely they have confirmed that the only way for users who use the steam client without a steam account linked to the launcher wil have to download the 3rd party client and not use the steam overlay...

I'm not sure what to say about this...i'm shocked.

Eve thru steam has been nothing but problems. You used to not even have a user account to do things like login to the forums. Your ID was steamuser54363879023709821 and that was it. Payments were different too if I recall.

And while I do use steam, I can't imagine it injecting itself into the several eve clients I like to open up. It's good for some things but its a bit too bloated for eve. What is so wrong with using the launcher and a client in window mode? The steam overlay just pissed me off half the time and got in the way when I pressed the wrong buttons.

Don't get mad at CCP because eve doesn't play well with steam. IMO they should have NEVER been connected, at least not in the way they are. Thats why CCP has made moves to migrate accounts over and such.

You shoulda jumped that ship long ago, guess you're paying for it now.

Maybe in your own mind, but I have no issues playing and using out of game tools. Kinda nice being able to see both and not some shafted overlay on top of my spaceships

    1. No ability to save photos on steam cloud.

    2. No access to steam chat (i would talk to ship mates who play other games apart from eve online.)

    3. No stats tracking or trading cards.

I'm truely sorry for buying a game twice to be able to play it on the platform of my choice. I should now download the client and not use the amazing features built into steam. I cant recover my steam linked version of the account. I believe it's registered to an email I no longer have access to. :-(

1 - The print screen button will save screenshots to the directory. (My documents/CCP/screenshots?) No its not auto-upload, but at least you don't have to fiddle with saving files and such. Its instant. Iv used steam screenshots, its meh at best. Using imgur from the screenshot directory doesn't bother me.
2 - You can still have steam launched, in fact the buddy window should be a pop out, and the chat boxes do too. Iv chatted with steam friends while playing eve. Its just not tied to the client.
3 - I personally don't use the trading cards, but I know ccp does keep track of some stats via the webpage/api. You can see how many hours you've logged in I'm pretty sure, and if you use a proper API tool you can get info on your current training, monies, ect without even logging in (let alone opening steam)

Sorry if I came off harsh, I just really dislike eve being thru steam as I'v seen a few threads in the past of people getting stuck/shafted from steam. (The whole steamuserid thing wouldnt let people make APIs. Well hell some corps wont even take you without an API, talk about a steam limitation) So Iv tried to steer people away best I can.

Best bet is contact CCP. Thankfuly in the age of skill extractors and such, you can somewhat easily migrate your eve-life to a new account. Even transfer characters off to a new account name not tied with steam. But to fix some of your missing features, try to add eve as a game in steam, might get some of that functionality back. But you really want them existing as two separate programs.

I have and unfortauntely I've been told there is nothing they can do to recover my steam account or transfer the charactors over to the steam account. I have tried logging in via my steam account and get told that eve is creating a new account, it's stuck in a loop. I'm unable to transfer things over to a new account and CCP Games won't help me figure out why. :(

Try to look into this? If not contact steam and try to get the account back? I hope you're seeing my recommendation about having the two separate Smile

Maybe just give it some time too. If it was a recent update, maybe its a bug or hiccup. Maybe it'll go away? Probably not the best idea to be using accounts you don't have email access to :p CCP even added e-mail verification requirements for all new accounts.

Just curious: these cards allow you to trade EvE ingame items using 3rd party means? Or what exactly?

The issue you describe sounds like a local issue to your account. CCP has not blocked Steam Logins. Such a thing would have been widely announced. (and as I work with the STEAM community page I would have been informed) I suggest reopening your ticket or filing a new one. Be clear and out line everything you did.
