Orca and Ice Mining

Currently the Orca can use 5 mining drones at a time to mine ores. However to get ice the drone bandwidth for a ice drone is 50 that is the max bandwidth for a Orca. So the Orca can only field 1 ice mining drone at a time.


Devs, can the Orca bandwidth be modified so that the band width is maxed at 250 and drone bay a larger size without the ability to
allow heavy drones on the orca?

or modify the bandwidth and volume of the ice drones to 10 each so that the Orca can fit 5 ice mining drones?


Those that care about mining please chime in. Those that don't care about mining this shouldn't matter to you.

The ice mining drones mine 1000 m3 per cycle. Not sure what the minimum cycle is with skills and bonuses but it isn't supposed to be better than a barge. Orca is a fleet support ship - not a mining fleet in its own right.

With 250 M3 bandwidth an Orca could launch a full squadron of 5 Gecko drones making it the most powerful combat ship in highsec by a wide margin. No one would bother using them for mining!

Pretty sure Orca/Rorqual role is boosting other more specialized ships in fleet and not doing their work.

I understand your points but consider the fact that the orca can already use 5 mining drones. why cant the orca use more ice mining drones than 1?


I agree abut the gecko, but isn't the gecko considered a heavy drone?

Why does it need 5? One ice mining drone does the work of 5 mining drones. The only thing I'd change with the ice drones is to halve the bandwith/volume and double the cycle time so all barges can use them.
Gecko is a heavy drone, and with 250mb/s you could launch 5.

I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

and would invalidate all the other mining vessels.

think like 10 orcas with 5 ice drones and you start to see problems forming

The mining yield was given to the orca because it was moved on grid.(So it could feel a little more engaging) It's mining yield can not top even a single hulk, nor should it. (With best fit and skills you can at best get about 1250m3 every 60 sec)

This is the same for ice, as it can pull in about a 3rd of what the best fit exhumers can. If you gave it 5 ice drones, it would have the yield of 2 ice fit exhumers which is insane.

No.


Not a proper idea. The Orca is setup as it is on purpose. Compare relative rates of acquisition of ice on all other ships and you will see this. High Sec Ice mining with Orcas has become more and more of an AFK activity since the changes to the hull. Allowing the greater speed of mining ice and the prices would go even more unstable.

Orca is fine exactly the way it is.

So I gave up running the numbers awhile ago but from what I remember the orca has about the same ore yield as an unboosted exhumed.

But I thought it only had about half the ice yield of an unbooted exhumer, so why not bump up the bonus or add a second ice drone?

My ice orca can make just up to 66 pieces of ice per hour by standing still at the same rock. But it takes about 3 hours to fill. And have about 350khp.
Compare that to an unboosted mackinaw. Seems fair to me.

Edit. Orca at the same rock, 264 pieces of ice in 4 hours, mackinaw (20khp) with ice drone incl. hauling trip(3AU) about 400 pieces of ice in 4 hours.

Back in my day, Orca sat in a belt then ONLY boosted and hauled.

I can only imagine it was very intentionally designed that way. maybe if ice wasn't in 1,000m3 chunks they would break it up but that's just how ice is.

Afaik people were complaining before (the patch) about the Rorqual being useless...
