After experienced the medium and large ships, I'm trying to understand the small ones and need some advice. My skill plan is on minmatar ships and projectile weapons. Which one of the following ships can beat a popular cruiser 1 on 1 (solo/no support), let's say a RLML Caracal or an Autocannon SFI and feel more comfortable (or can be)?

  • Wolf / Jaguar
  • Claw / Stiletto
  • Svipul

RLML caracal is death to small ships, do not even consider engaging (yes they CAN be beaten, but its fighting a loosing battle)

but I'll try and go over your options for you. before I do though, you should know that minmatar smalls are not in a good place right now, they just haven't kept up well since the rifter got dethroned as king frigate (rightfully so, it was the original cancer)
and they could probably do with a rebalancing to bring them more in line (medium and up is okay though, so don't loose heart on the whole line)

Wolf/Jag - AF's across the board aren't a good choice right now. there are some niche uses and exceptions of course, but anything they can do a T3D can do better and for not much more isk or training requirements. That being said, Jag would be the better of your two choices, it is faster and more agile than the wolf, and with the current meta being primarily "kite and snipe" its "run up and punch them in the face" might be able to get the drop on some cruisers.

Claw/Stiletto - Interceptors are fleet ships, they won't have the dps to take down a cruiser and anything with light drones will shred them. not a good choice for solo pvp. if you want something similar slashers are good for cheep and dirty pvp, and firetails are a beauty to fly. but frigates will be your targets of choice.

Svipul - Still cancer, but has received a massive dose of chemotherapy. For once ccp managed to show a bit of restraint with the nerfbat, Confessors seem to have taken over top-spot for T3D's but the svipul is still more than capable of holding its own, and out of the options you've listed is the one most likely to go toe to toe with a cruiser.

Hound - cloaky torp goodness, one of my favorite ships, and if fit out right can apply fairly well against cruisers. however, you will need to pick and choose your targets carefully.

Bifrost - flown well CD's can do some pretty awesome things, not as good as some of the other CD options, but you don't see them often which might give you the element of surprise.

The only problem with assault frigates is all the tactical destroyers around the place.
Theyre pretty much made for up ship fighting like the op is describing.
T3d's dont sig tank well , belive me i realy realy tried to make an "up ship" t3d
and ive never felt that an enyo or ishkur wouldnt do it better.
The issue is anyone in a t3d will go through you for a shortcut and to be honest, there usually is someon in one nearby.

Key factors for fighting up ship are
Small sig,
Utility highs and room for a neut,
Drones or an equaly good trick for dealing with drones,
Good active tank.

^^Ralph here specialises in killing big ships with small ships, he knows his stuff.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

well with an endorsement like that ill have to elaborate a little then i suppose.

for missiles you need to be as fast as possible and have as small as sig as possible
to mitigate as much of their damage as possible,
for rlml you Realy need those and high resists and a solid active tank
and even then you are going to be lucky to survive at all.

turrets are a lot easier ,
google "eve online how to spiral approach" and watch some of the video results,
get in close,
keep your transversel velocity up as high as you can,
kill their drones first and you should be ok.

do bear in mind that if you fit for this type of atypical frigaty thing,
you do actually gimp yourself for the normal frigaty type of thing quite badly
and normal frigates ,fit and flown to do typical frigaty things
will do them all over your face and then call you mean and unkind things in local.
its also worth noting that rlml's and t3d's will ruin your day pretty much regardless.

here is an excellent resource written by the guy i learned from (r.i.p).
