[Winter] Mobile Siphon Unit Idea

With the upcoming refinery structures this winter and the changes to how reactions are done what will become of the Mobile Siphon Units? To me this seems to be another "technical oversight" from CCP and is now a direct action that is outright removing content from the game for no explained reason.

I would propose that with the new mining ledger that logs everything that is mined from the asteroid belt it generates for it to instead of taking materiel it will act in a one use fashion similar to a Mobile Cyno Inhibitor where it prevents the logging of resources taken from the asteroid belt for a set period of time before burning out.

I am not one to try to hazard a guess at a cost for them in this new function but this would allow a similar function as to what they do currently. If other propositions are made into effect, SOV allowing a system wide ledger, then having a set range being the grid it was anchored in would allow more than just stealing from the new moon mining mechanic expanding it from a very small niche that it already occupies to one that is more broad.

no need for this, siphons can go away.

You will need to have a mining operation atleast one a week maybe once every 2 weeks and CCP is making it easy for people who want to steal it to be able to do that by giving plenty of information as to when the field will appear.

You can bring your gang down and kill the people mining and take the loot.

Siphons are AFK game play that is used to counter AFK game play.. it silly.

I will agree in the current state of siphons that is what they do. My proposal is to make a means to counter the logging of activity done as although an alliance like Test can easily control a system and have Intel channels that cover any means, besides a wormhole connecting to it, to that area and they keep everything locked down not everyone can do that. Nor can it be assumed that everyone has the ability to fully mine out a belt and make it something that is a moot point. So in general this is more likely to have more use in lowsec than other areas and I acknowledge that even though some people do not like it, finding a use for assets already spent is better than letting them be wasted.

If siphons are removed from the game, they will be reimbursed. It is unlikely CCP will consider tampering with the logging. Moon mining is a significant source of alliance/corporate income and the new mechanics may see line members doing most of the harvesting. A reliable tracking mechanism that lets the owner of the refinery tax the people who mine the resource is required.

It's also quite possible that most of the mining will be done by multibox Rorqual fleets which can probably strip the belt clean in an hour if drones are allowed to harvest moon material.

ooooor you steal from the owner and take the concupiscence of doing it. not like they can really do anything about it unless you are dumb enough to steel from a neighbor

If I recall right someone already asked about Mobile Siphon Units at Fanfest.

CCP's response was basically that it was an area of gameplay that never really matured or went where they'd hoped it would. In the new system it'll be replaced with simply stealing the ore directly.

The activity logging doesn't need a counter. If you don't want your mining logged then blow up the refinery and take the spot yourself. Knowing who mines what and being able to execute possible retribution against a thief is the privilege of the person who owns the expensive structure that yanks the moon chunk into orbit in the first place.

Honestly, I think it would be devilishly fun to start doing blops drops on moon mining fleets.

Think about it.

You drop bombers, recons, and prospectors on a mining fleet. Pop the mining fleet, scoop the drops, then ninja-mine their moon until a response fleet is formed.

Then you keep one battleship with the mining fleet (to bridge out), and split your pvp ships into scouting parties to monitor for a response fleet.

Response fleet will probably attempt to go straight to the moon system, so once they minus out of the system you're scouting from (or you get the call that a response fleet is inbound) your dps ships bridge out via their accompanying battleship(s).

Unless they've got 20 rorqs. Then you'll need to upship a bit lol.

With this I can understand I was more concerned with it just being something they forgot since that would be wasted man hours on the assets they made. In similar vain to what happened to using plex for character transfers as an example.

To everyone I will say thank you for the input that was given as it was constructive and not as much of a troll as I was expecting for something I came up with while I had nothing at work to do.

How about changing the Siphon into a solar siphon. instead of poaching moon materials anchor it near the sun and make some other item. A solar isotope that could be made into a universal fuel block that would work in any ship or structure would be cool. It would be a personal asset in space but the materials would be like PI and they would be cheap and easily destroyed. Almost every fleet warps to the sun and so enemy fleets could easily pop the solar siphon and steal the loot.
