So today I found a wormhole in my backyard and I thought "what the hell"

After arriving in the farthest reaches of space, I checked nearby systems for activity and all was quiet, so I went about scanning and discovered a Gas Cloud. I had a harvester a short trip away so I quickly returned ready for the job. I moved to range and fired up the harvester

.....seconds later I received a letter letting me know that I had been killed. I thought it strange as I put the letter away, but sure enough, there I was......dead in space with no one around.

So anyway, thank you for the wonderful mail service and the Zork ending as without it I wouldn't have even known I had been killed or how.

If you're harvesting nullsec gas, it can explode and kill you. If you were in a wormhole system, your overview may not have been configured to show Sleepers and they might have shot you.

I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

Sounds like you got killed by PVE action; either the environment or perhaps the tougher NPCs in wormhole space.

But, about the mechanics of it, keep in mind that the EVE client has to do several things in quick succession when your ship and pod get killed:

- show a pretty (but graphics intensive) explosion
- create your ship wreck with whatever modules survive the explosion
- create your pod and move you to it
- generate the email and insurance payout

So the slower computers will have graphics lag at this point in time, because of all the stuff that's happening.

However, the biggest source of lag when you get killed is internet lag. Your computer has to wait for the EVE server to confirm that you are, in fact, dead, and the communication may take up to 2 seconds (round trip), so a lot of times your client will show you alive and hanging in there, and then suddenly oops you've been dead for 2 seconds already, because the server said so.

Most (maybe all?) wormhole gas sites spawn NPC guards after a certain period of time (I think 20 minutes). If your scanner ship warped to the gas site, that would have started the npc spawn timer.

In short, when huffing wormhole gas, you either need to kill the sleepers that spawn or harvest and leave before the NPC timer expires (so called 'ninja huffing'). Looking up the name of the specific site on http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=HomePage will tell you exactly what you are dealing with.

2 seconds of lag would make EvE literally unplayable for me, though i guess i'm just lucky to live about a nanosecond from the server..

You should probably make sure your overview is set up correctly.
