Help me understand what happened.

I've discovered I enjoy scanning and hacking so I've been practicing in hi-sec. I try to act as if I'm in not so safe space so that I'll be better in the habit of caution when I'm ready to step up. So here's where I started to get confused.

I scanned down a level 3 data site. I don't remember what it was called but I'm pretty sure it's the first site above level 1 that I've found. So I warp in with my Magnate and I get an on screen message saying (paraphrased) the eyes of the nation are upon you, any aggression will be dealt with. I land on site and almost immediately an Anathema also lands. As I said I've been mimicking safer behavior so I start to burn away abit and cloak up.

I watch the other ship start a hack and a fleet of npcs lands. They start unloading on the Anathema while I continue to coast away from them. The Anathema pops and very quickly after I also pop. I was watching the action more than myself so I suppose I could've gotten too close to something and decloaked? My questions are, did the npcs forcefully decloak me and are fleets like that part of certain site types or the level of site?

Any clarity is greatly appreciated. Cheers. o7

sounds like you found a sansha covert site. That is a timed site where after a while a group of sansha npc spawn shoot at you for a little while then blow up the site. After the site is blown up they warp off. I think if you fail a hack the can blows up too causing some aoe damage. Since you were cloaked i suspect that you just got caught in the aoe blast. I just do those sites in a stratios which has enough tank that the rats barely scratch the paint.

Interesting. So it was the type of site and not the level that made it dangerous then?

Correct.

Since you're still new, I strongly suggest whenever you find a site, throw the name of it into Google or YouTube before you warp to it.

You found a level III Ghost Site. Pretty dangerous, because you have a little time window to hack the kegs. The timer is set between 17 and 30 sec. After that NPC drones will warp to you and blow up the kegs. The explosion is near 10k radius with like a 6k damage which 1 shot most frigates. The kegs will explode after hack is failed.

This site is a kind of data/relic combat site which requires some fat ship. Usually SoE ships are good: Astero for low levels or Straitos for high levels.

There are other types of dangerous signatures in hi/low-sec systems – Sleeper Sites with a lot of traps. But your current skills will not let you scan down them. The ultimate challenge is a level V Sleeper cache which requires all Scanning skills to V and T3 Tengu to crack the kegs there (Straitos is also ok, but I’m not sure he’ll survive the third room).
