Looting Wrecks You Didn't Kill

Assumption on my part: If I kill a rat, no one, unless they are fleeted with me or I abandon the wreck, can loot it. It should appear as yellow to anyone else. They can salvage it, but not loot it.

Situation: A corp mate and I were mining. My mate killed 3 rats as we came into a belt. As he is tractoring them in to loot and salvage them, a player (not fleeted with us) warps in and proceeds to loot two of the wrecks before warping off.

My assumption seems to be incorrect, but I haven't been able to loot a wreck unless I killed the ship, a fleet mate killed the ship, or the wreck was abandoned (blue). Please educate me.

Thanks.

Anyone can loot a wreck.

You get a suspect flag if you loot wreck that is yellow. You can't do this in hisec with a green safety.

Blue wrecks are free-for-all (abandoned), but are technically still owned so don't shoot them.

This. It's pretty clear-cut.

Being able to salvage whatever you want means salvage drones are a godsend, though. Especially on an Orca. Someone ganked at a gate? Free salvage. Belt rats not killed by your fleet? Free salvage. Random wrecks at a trade hub? Free salvage!

You can't loot a yellow wreck because your safety setting is set to green. If you change your safety setting to yellow, you will be able to loot any wreck, but if it is a yellow wreck you will gain a suspect flag with all the risks that comes with.

EDIT: In my opinion, and since this isn't the New Citizen's forum I will share it, Eve is much more fun when you set your safety setting to yellow. The opportunity for shenanigans (and profit for that matter) increases many-fold. Actually, it is most fun when you set it to red, but I encourage you to do a little experimentation before you commit to that level of fun. Start with yellow for a while and then you can work your way up to the maximum entertainment red offers.

my favorite thing about eve is the ability to go anywhere and shoot anyone, sucks having some idiot team mate you can't even shoot in other games.

Oh you don't know how much this pisses me off in other games. Most common reason for me to ragequit and never look back.

Why didn't you shoot him?

As for why you can't loot wrecks like that, change your safety from green to yellow.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not trying to loot yellows myself.

So, ok, as long as I'm not green I can loot yellows. That will flag me as suspect though? Shouldnt the pilot have been flagged then? He wasn't.

The pilot should've been flagged if he took someone else's loot. It doesn't happen to me often, but I think their name turns yellow in the overview? Someone will more experience can confirm or correct me.

Maybe it's just me, but I still think the safety system was a bad move. I thought that much when it was introduced way back when, I still think it now. It's the one thing in Eve that just doesn't, in my completely honest opinion, fit Eve in any way, shape, or form that I can see. Personally, I think the default shouldn't be green at least.

What's the issue? It is a convenience thing in that it provides you an option to not accidentally do something you didn't intend to do due to some misclick or whatever. For instance in flying in a fleet, you often want to target a fleet mate to do something like transmit capacitor or shield to him. It is easy in that situation to accidentally shoot him.

We have safeties on guns in real life. I don't see the issue with EvE providing the option. If you don't like it, it's easy to turn off and keep it off.

It's not just you.

There's a world of difference between adding quality of life mechanics and catering to the terminally stupid. The safety system is a great example of the latter, in my opinion.

If he wasn't in your fleet and the wrecks are white to you he wen't suspect. Now your overview may not be setup in a way that makes it easy to spot suspects. My advice is to go the the Eve Uni overview setup guide and use theirs as it's very good for both new and old players.

On a side note while you can legally engage suspects looting your wrecks you need to be careful about doing so as they may be baiting. That said you never know until you try so good luck Blink

Not to be mean, but I have to chuckle a little bit every time I see another "It works in real life" arguments pop up. Also, not that you have a bad point about unintended fratricide among fleet members being a legitimate concern, but that's a specific case where something akin to the safety system would make better sense as a fleet mechanic rather than an "everyone and everything" mechanic. In the case of making general mistakes, I feel it should at the very most advise and inform, but not outright completely prevent the possibility of human error or discourage taking risks like it does. As strange as that sounds, the current safety mechanic just doesn't sound very Eve-like to me.

Looting things floating in space while someone who thinks they own it is in attendance is how fun happens.

You're not being mean, you're just being stupid.

Now that that's addressed, I guess you are welcome to your opinion on safeties. I disagree of course, but whatever.

It was hardly terminal stupidity most of the time. Most of the people getting exploded for illegal acts were either newbies (who can't be expected to know better yet) or people who fell victim to interface issues (locking the wrong target because the overview changed as they clicked, etc). And don't forget that the old system had a "safety" setting with the "do you want to do this illegal thing" popup, most PvP players just disabled it so they wouldn't lose valuable time at the start of a fight. But the only way to see your status or reset to "safety" mode was to dig through an obscure settings page. All the current system does is add a clearer interface element for the feature, a textbook quality of life change.

Something I run into all the time when flying incursions is this. You have a fleetmate targeted because you are transmitting capacitor to him. Then you have a bunch of enemies targeted. You move your fleetmate target icon to the end of the row so you don't accidentally shoot him. Then you start activating modules against enemy targets. An enemy target gets blapped, and you push the key to reactive your guns on the next target, but guess what, that one disappears right when you are hitting your hotkey, which means you would have shot your fleetmate if there was no safety.

Nothing to do with terminal stupidity, and everything to do with quality of life. And YOU CAN TURN THE DAMN THING OFF. Meaning, the people against this are just being dicks, plain and simple.
