Hi

I am new to EVE and started mission running and really enjoy it. I have finished all the Career agent missions and have started LVL 1 security missions.

I am looking for some help on what to train for next and what is the ship most suitable minmatar ship for running mission. I have some ships have turret boosts or missile boosts, which is better to use. I have been getting in close and messy blowing them up.

Any information will be great , just looking for some guidance

Looking forward to hearing from you

Minmitar have the most flexible ships. They have ships that can use both missiles and guns (projectile turrets) and either armor or shield tank. For level 1 missions, you want to use either a frigate or a destroyer. Your options are the Rifter or Thrasher (guns) or Breacher or Talwar (missiles).

Some of the information here may be outdated but it its a good place to start.

for gun ships, you can advance from thraser, then stabber, hurricane, tempest, machariel/vargur.
for missile ships, talwar, scythe fleet issue, cyclone, typhoon, typhoon fleet issue, barghest/golem (but these 2 are not minmatar ships). or maybe you can jump to caldari ship tree if you find the ScyFI too expensive, then caracal, drake, raven,, raven navy issue, barghest/golem.

Minmatar ships usually have balanced mid and low slot layout, and some are bonused for shield boosting. So I think it's a good idea to train for shield tank first and use the lows for dps.

You won't be able to go around only with Minmatar ships if you want to be successful at what you do. Cross train but do not maximize your skills. Go to level 4 where it is necessary and train level 3 for all the four races. Then maximize what you use most.

Minmatar is fairly decent at mission running, at the lower levels it doesn't matter too much as you can quickly train into overwhelming dps, most lv1/2s are very short and only have a few targets to shoot.

in general I would go with a shield tank and artillery this lets you use your lows for gyrostabs and tracking enhancers. I would also suggest against grouping guns as arty has high volley and low rate of fire, grouping can result in a lot of overkill. Might be worth it to group 2-3 guns to make 3 groups, I usually run a prop mod in f1, and then my guns in f2,3,4.

lv1s: Thrasher
lv2s: Rupture
lv3s: hurricane
lv4s: maelstrom or tempest should work to get started, but your end goal will be the machairel.

Hello and welcome to Eve.

All of the replies have good info. A passive shield tank with Shield Extenders and Invulnerability Field modules is easy to fit and works very well in low level missions. For higher level missions, an active shield tank with Shield Booster and Shield Boost Amplifier along with mission specific Damage Resistance modules is more suited.

Choice of weapons depends on your piloting tactics as well as skill level. Fitting shield tanks allows options to fit up modules in low slots to increase damage output and weapon tracking, thus making it much easier to quickly complete the missions.

Last point is that having a larger ship doesn't always equate to being able to easily complete the mission. Personally I like using medium hull class ships for higher level missions since they're harder to hit due to having a smaller ship signature as well as being more agile and faster. Course the down side of that is they also have less DPS output compared to large hull class ships which means it'll take a bit longer to complete the missions.

Anyway, I hope you have a long and rewarding career here in Eve.

Yaosus, You won't be able to go around only with Your own experience Blink and please, don't try to advice others based on your own, limited knowledge.

Your statement that one needs to cross train to be successful in what he does is not true. I have started this character as Minmatarian pilot from the very begining several years ago and he's still Minmatarian, flying Minmatarian ships. The only "cross training" I actually did, was training Galentian skills to access Angel ships that require both Minmatar and Galentian skills. And I never regretted my choice. Now, after trying ships of other races on my other characters I am still most satisfied with Minmatar ships, what they offer, and this character is still my main.

As a matter of fact you can fly only Minmatarian ships all over the career and need not anything else. But that does not mean that this game style will fit to everyone. Someone might want to try ships of other races and even prefer them eventually over Minmatarian. But Minmatarian ships are very versatile, offer a lot of different fitting options and in most cases you won't need anything else, if you really know the game and have experience.

Other than that, I fully support the information of other posters above me and would like to support the idea of DeMichael Crimson about usefulness of medium size ships. A lot of new players try to get onto biggest ships possible as soon as possible... I started flying on Maelstrom (Minmatarian batleship) in about one month or bit more after the start of my career in EvE. But later on I understood my mistake and returned to training cruise size ships and guns, trained support skills, and when I got them as well as ingame experience, I found out that I can be much more effective with well trained cruiser, or strategic cruiser, than a barely accessible battleship. Now, when I have skills, battleships are great too, but its after a long run and many years, with almost perfect skills, which wont happen over night for a new player (unless he's eager to inject skills for cash, which I don't advise too).

I second this. And you don't need to train into T2 guns until you are doing level 4 missions.

The simple answer to the question is to train into a cruiser so you can move onto the level 2 missions. Use the mastery tab in "show info" of the cruiser you are interested in as a guide for training.

You are at the stage of the game where training is fairly fast (frigates and small weapons skill up really quickly). Use this time to identify which of the four empire factions you prefer aesthetically (in terms of hull design and weapon systems). The "best" ship is debatable and each faction has viable options (although some are better overall)

The majority of "end game" pve combat utilizes a (combination) of the following three ship hulls::

Marauder
Pirate faction battleship*
Strategic (t3) cruiser

*pirate battleships are the preferred choice for end game group pve (incursions)

I would advise looking at those hull types and find a trend that most fits your preferences. Effectiveness is important but if it isn't enjoyable (and visually) interesting to you, that doesn't matter very much.

I did not play this game much. I only started playing around 2004-2005. This toon is number 9 in my queue and I unboxed it after the skill injectors were implemented. I've played the nullsec pvper the nullsec ratter the lowsec pirate the hisec merc and everything in between.

Let me share a little bit of my limited experience. This game is NOT about playing alone. The best achievements are obtained with a group. If you play alone you will get bored or ganked or you will not have access to the best space goodies this game has to offer. The first requirement to JOIN a proper group is the ability to actually FLY ships. Crosstraining the minimum is the best you can do and it will only take you a couple of weeks. You can then decide which ships are going to make your life easier and start maximizing.

Hey buddy a strategic cruiser is a T3 :)

That's because you had no idea how the turret/missiles mechanics worked (among other things - until you get to fly a stategic cruiser you might aswell grow two or three 30 cm long beards). You can outdamage/outlast and generally do much better with a level 4 trained battleship than with any t1 cruiser no matter the training. But you need to know what you are doing, which obviously was not your case.

Well if you have waited many years to fly a battleship with perfect skills :)))) then you're one of the most patient players I have ever heard of...or maybe there is another word to describe what you did and it is not patience. And you are right, waiting years to level 5 everything pays off... when you are old and retired.

Within 3 months you can fly a really decent BS with good skills, given that you know what you are doing.

MY ADVICE :
Establish a list of goals, this is a game you'll play for quite a while if it catches you.

Make an effort and train cybernetics to 5 and plug in +5 implants. While you train for it you might as well farm the isk to buy the implants.

Avoid lowsec/nullsec for the first few months until you learn a bit about how to GTFO from a fight and save your pod. In low and null if you get bubbled you lost your pod, or you could get smartbombed at the gates or during fights.

Train to level 4 everything that is valid for your goal from support skills/engineering/armor/shields/rigs/navigation.

Study and learn how the turret tracking system works and the missile explosion vs ship signature and speed. Understanding this mechanic is crucial to every player.

You can be successful in what you want to do with Minmatar ships only, if it's only missioning. Polarized Vargur is really one of the kings in mission running.
But if you want to do more stuff successfully, especially if those involve pvp, cross train is necessary.
