You were mining with a Retriever in Low-Sec. That's why it was "so easy". Hell i'm a null bear and even I would have killed you for that alone.

Start thinking to use the Procurer or a Skiff with Medium shield expander.

A procurer with medium shield skill, you get about 15k hp of shield alone. If you add resist you'll tank way better.

What I was looking for was why I was getting a message that their warp core was interfering with target lock. I've seen that before on targets that are just about to jump, but not on targets that are sticking around, and why when they are within drone range and attacking my drones ignored them.
This toon may only be 3 weeks old, but I am not. Nor am I a new player.

What you describe happens if the ship is either still landing on grid (some 5s after warp) or already escaping in warp. Maybe you tried to target one of them too early ... spam ctrl+click is what you do in those moments if they are still landing.

tbh, he is in low. i would go for max yield there too.. once you are caught you are caught. more tank will not save your ass...

Drones in low sec = manual target whether passive or aggressive.

Targeting =. You were in retriever, so most likely you were dead in 2 hard cycles. You probably spammed target lock before they were fully on grid and were instantly killed. Just a theory.

There are several things that could have happened that lead to this, but I imagine these were likely what you had happen:

Lock problem: (others have already pointed this out)
They had likely just came out of warp and you tried targeting too early sending that initial failed to lock due to warp message. However, once landing you were damped by the Arazu to the point where you could no longer lock. Causing further attempts to lock to simply fail. You were simply dead before the initial message as to why your lock failed disappeared.

Drone problem:
I'm guessing you didn't launch your drones until you were engaged. Drone's set to aggressive or defensive will not recognize targets already engaged prior to their being in space. Meaning you would have had to manually tell them to attack, which you could not without a locked target.


The only problem between these you could have solved is the drones having them in space at all times so once you are engaged they will automatically fight. Like others have stated, try mining in a procurer/skiff. You can get a lot more tank and firepower out of these. Not that it would have saved you vs what came at you, but you would have lasted longer or been able to warp out in time once you saw the Cynabal on dscan. Which is the last tip I'll give you, always keep dscan up and know who's in local with you. If you see something you think might be coming after you, get out unless you're prepared to fight.
