T3 vs Tier 3 -- we need a convention

Too much lately people have confused Tech 3 cruisers and Tier 3 battlecruisers in conversation. It comes far too naturally to call them both "T3" in shorthand conversation. We need a better solution, a convention that everyone uses.

Tech 3 ships are going to remain "T3". They were the first that got the title, and deserve it. Plus, nobody refers to tier 2 BCs as "T2 BCs". People hardly refer to them as any more than simply "battlecruisers". However, tier 3 BCs are in a class of their own, separate from the tier 1 and 2 BCs, so they deserve a special designation. "Tier 3" is clumsy and requires 4 (FOUR!!!) keystrokes for the word "tier" and an extra one for the space -- an utterly unnecessary waste of our typing effort.

Reducing it to "T3" works, but only when it is contextually clear what you are talking about, to avoid confusion with T3 (strategic) cruisers. Removing the T's capitalization from the BCs is a possible solution (t3 vs T3), but many people won't be assed to adhere to that, particularly in very shorthand stuff: "hey bro i gccd in my t3 2day n had xpensive lossmail"

Another possible solution is using an extra letter (as much effort as that might be). "Ti3" or "ti3" for indicating tier 3 BCs. Makes them sound like fancy calculators though, or titanium molecules.

What do you think? Any innovative solutions from the community?

I like Tr3 . It almost says it. Tr3 and T3. The T and r are next to each other on the keyboard, too.

Derus. We'll meet you out there. Go ahead and start without us.

Use the last letter from the word "tier" instead of the first. I.e. R3.

Edit: Confound you Tippia!

Actually BC3 is pretty good. Its easily extensible to any ship type and its very specific.

I also like the TR3 convention. I cuts across all classes and most people that knows about tier 3 will make the link.

R3 is also ok, but may take a few more brain cycles before someone makes the link to tier 3.

And R3 is just confusing to those who have lived in Southern Provi...

There are tier 3 battleships, cruisers and frigates, tier 3 battlecruisers are spoke of a lot due to them being new, if you are unable to differentiate between tech 3 and tier 3 ships you need to relearn the English language Roll

Tier 3 -> Tr3. They're right next to each other, too! And will look distinct even in the client's crappy font!

I vote T3 for Tech 3, and 3^ for Tier 3. (Note the ^ is on the right of the 3 to avoid confusion with m^3)

You really don't have problems at all do you?

Btw the term "Tier 3" is far older than T3s are.....

Why not just invert the two characters and use '3T'?
For '3rd Tier'.

"Did you see those 3rd Tier Battlecruiser stats?"
"Yeah, the Tornado is the only good 3rd Tier Battlecruiser"
"NERF 3rd Tier BCs!"

I think it works, do you?

Huh, I didn't expect this much good discussion, honestly. I made the OP while sleep deprived and slightly loopy, but re-reading it myself, it's a very valid question.

The best suggestion I've heard so far is using TR or Tr as a prefix. "Tr3", for someone who doesn't know what it means, leads them to pronounce it out loud in their head: "tee arr three". "Tier 3" almost says itself.

TR3 or BC3

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

You're never going to get everyone to agree on anything.

How about just taking the extra half a second to type something properly, and using the english language instead of needing shortcuts for every word in a sentence?

why is this even an issue

i dont know ANYBODY who calls an Oracle or a Talos a T3 ship

the solution to this is to call them what they are, battlecruisers.

Tech level traditionally has roman numbers, while tier level has arabic numbers.
so:
T III: Tech three
T 3: Tier three

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.
