Best solo PvE fitting for Gallente Battleship

I have a Hyperion which I have set up for shield tanking and is currently fit with 6 425mm railguns. Whilst this is a great setup with high DPS, especially when paired with a huge falloff of 60km, I want something more close range. I just feel that I can only take on one enemy at a time. I have a microwarpdrive, but it uses a lot of cap recharge, and the standard speed is abysmal. So I was wondering. Should I refit my Hyperion with 6 blasters, or should I completely change ship and go for a Megathron, Brutix, or Dominix. What do you guys think?

"more close range" is a broad term, does that mean 5-20 or 20-70. Some missions are indeed short range and there a blaster fit can make good sense, if it's a "normal" mission then blasters just mean that you'll be out of range 80% of the time, wasting time and cap to remedy the problem.

A Hyperion compares very well to a Mega or navy mega. Its dps is on par, it has much better cap management and it has a 5th midslot. Its tracking is worse but that's easily solved by fitting 2 TC. While shield fit can make sense it has two issues:

- you can't use a midslot for MJD, which is really handy
- TE do not give the same bonuses as a scripted TC

So Switch to an armor setup with AB, MJD, 2 TC and a cap booster. Armor tank it, 3 Mag stabs and then decide if you you want 350, 425 or blasters for a specific mission.

Sorry for being a noob but can you tell what those acronyms are? I also mean that in a Hyperion, enemies always get close and then rails seem pointless. I just want to know whether blasters are better in more situations than rails. Another thing; I am armour tanking, which is what i meant, but not what i said Big smile

PVE, generally, favours range. You lose some dps but you gain efficiency due to not wasting time getting into range. Also because npc move straight at you making it easy for a turret ship to take care of them. Again, some missions are very short range and thus are best done with blasters.

A few things are important though:

- in order to make use of a ranged fit you need to understand the mission and your ship/fit. Because being ranged that means you MUST take care of stuff before they come close, so you take out the faster movers first (while they're still at range) before you take out the slower (but harder hitting) targets. It also means you need to learn which group to aggro first and in what order to shoot them

- a Battleship for PVE is only really useful in lvl 4 missions (some specific lvl 3 missions and/or missile ships with rapid heavies aside). Big guns suck at hitting small/fast targets so if you're not doing lvl 4 missions, don't use a turreted BS. If you do lvl 3 missions switch to the Brutix instead

- the fit must make a modicum of sense, I checked your killboard and it's.... horrible :P The lossfits are cringe worthy, which is fine and as expected for a newbie. Your Hyperion fit is uhm... "not very good" and a large part of the reason you do bad in it. Again, not pointing and laughing: it's to be expected as a newbie, we all had that phase :)

Here's a sample fit, it could be optimised further but for now it's a decent start. The armor repper looks blingy but is actually quite cheap, especially compared to the ship cost itself.

yeah, apologies Lol I'm gonna try that fit tonight. Just another quick question, if I wanted to use blasters and get into range for PvE, what ship would you recommend and could you possibly recommend a fit as well? Thanks, this has opened my eyes a lot Big smile

Kronos works fine with blasters for PVE.

Dominix imo has better application than a rail/sentry hyperion so it usually finishes missions quicker even if the hyperion has more paper dps.

Unless it's a very specific short range mission then blaster will suck due to range issues, the only way to make that work is by using Null ammo, which requires T2 guns. So, generally, the "don't use blasters until you can use T2 guns, and even then it's probably not a great idea" applies.

The Hype still has the tank and 5th mid slot to help you, on the down side it's slow compared to the Mega and lacks tracking. A navy Mega would probably do better there due to tracking, speed and agility but it would be close enough for you to try it on your Hyperion, as you have it already, and give it a go to see if it suits you. Don't bother with a normal Megathron, fitting is horrible and the dps is worse.

Ideally for this would be the Vindicator, it's even more agile, it has an awesome web bonus helping your tracking issues and its dps isn't based on the gallente BS skill lvl. It is however difficult to fit, its cap use is "uncomfortable" for a newer player and I'd never suggest a newbie to use a Vindicator because it's expensive and you'll lose it just as easily as any other ship. Bigger or more expensive won't save you, it just makes for more cringe worthy losses. But assuming high skills and experience, it would be the ship to go for. Long term the Kronos would indeed work for it.

It means don't bring your Hyperion to Erila where you lose it to other players.

A big ship doesn't make you more survivable in PVP, it just makes you a slower and easier to catch target. A PVE fit ship will pretty much never win in a PVP scenario so the second you jumped into low sec with your PVE fit BS is the second you lost it.

You can go to low sec for PVE but it doesn't make sense to use a BS for it, nor does it make sense to do this in Caldari low sec because that's where all the fierce carebear PVPers hang to kill the never ending stream of newbies who wandered into LS. Other types of PVE, which require other ship types, can make sense.

If you do missions it just makes best sense to stay in high sec so find yourself an agent that isn't in a constellation with low sec systems in it. That way you avoid being sent to low sec by your agent.

You'd be safer doing PVE in high and fitting out ships for PVP when you go to low.
And, this may sound like a silly question, but after looking at one kill report, are you grouping your guns?

Another thing; why use drones without boosters when my control range is 25 km. If I use rails, I won't be going closer than 30km, so what is the point?

If you fly a BS you MUST have decent drone skills, to take care of the small & up close stuff your big guns can't handle. Training drone control range skills it part of that: get Drone Avionics to 4 and Advanced Drone Avionics to 3. Now you have 50km drone range.

ratting in high sec can work but you'd not use a BS for it, cruiser max. Just roam around and check for anomalies.
