A couple of wreck salvage questions

Hello,
While missioning and after taking out a load of NPCs, when I go around all the wrecks do I need to open the cargo hold as well as salvage the wreck with a salvager? I ask because looting the cargo needs closer proximity than the Salvager module so doing both requires a bit more time and maneuvering than just hitting it with the Salvager.

I was also wondering about the items I've been salvaging (damaged circuits etc), they seem to vary wildly in value but I wasn't sure what they were for. Are they for invention and industry? Should I be saving them all up for future production opportunities?

Lastly, to improve my salvaging to get better salvage is it all about levelling the skills or is it more about going after higher level rats and wrecks?

Cheers for any advice.

get a tractor beam, yes you loot them

No, you don't need to open them. When you finish salvage of a wreck with stuff in it, all of it will be placed in a can. You can take the contents or you can leave it or blow it up. If you're going to leave it, abandon the can (last two options in context menu of a can). Someone else may find it's contents useful.

They are used to make rigs. Don't bother with it now. When you're gonna need them, you can always hit the market or kill rats.

Bigger rats can have some more valuable things, but it's always random.

That's your starter corporation, owned by NPC. You can change it any time.

EDIT: If you are short on cash it's better to at least look what's inside the wreck. One day I was ratting in 0.8 (had to fill up the cargo hold on the way to Jita) I found a shiny new module worth 100kk (that's 100 million ISK). So, you can sometimes take some really nice things... but it's rare.

Key bit about salvage; While most items you salvage are fairly cheap, you get a lot of those cheap ones. There are also some specific types of salvage (that are more rare) that fetch quite a lot of ISK. I wouldn't worry about what exact salvage you get, just salvage and sell everything on Jita market to rig builders and you'll make a nice pile of ISK.

Salvage, if you are into industry - save it for later.
You will need *lots* of salvage if you eventually select to start building rigs. It's not the best income in high sec, but depending on where you are located can turn out to be very profitable.

Some of the salvage you will find will bring in good isk, but you can also buy the small rig blueprints cheaply enough and the good thing is they don't need researching since the amounts of salvage used to build them are so low that a higher ME on the blueprint makes no difference. Below are some examples of common small rigs. Check them out on the market, you may find that there is a little profit to be made if the volume or price is high enough.

Small Salvage Tackle rig - commonly used in destroyers for salvaging missions

Small Low Friction Nozzle Jet rig - commonly used on frigates to give them more agility
http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/item.php?type_id=31154

Small Polycarbon Engine Housing rig - again used on frigates to make them fast and agile
http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/item.php?type_id=31178

Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade rig - used on probing ships to increase probe strength
http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/item.php?type_id=31214

As you can see the amounts of salvage needed aren't large, just a handful of each per rig built so fairly easy to construct a few from what you get from even some low level missions. The small rig blueprints can be found ont he market for around 450,000 ISK each so well within the reach of new players to give it a go.

Just run the numbers before you start making rigs. Some (mostly the armor rigs) have very tight margins. Where any waste will destroy your profitability.

Using a blueprint calculator (not a shameless plug, honest. Well, ok it is.) helps.

You can change it if you join a player owned corp. If you are not in a player corp, it will always be the same NPC corp.

dont bother with salvage unless its from lvl 4 missions, they will simply yield more salvage components and subsequently are more likely to yield more valuable components. I wasted a lot of time early on in my pve career trying to salvage lvl 1's lvl 2's. Terrible waste of time.

Also they will drop Battle ship size modules which almost always have good value, or if nothing else you can reprocess them for a good mineral yield both in amount and value of the minerals them selves.

Leaning toward Indy related skills pairs well with mission runners because they can manufacture alot of stuff.

Every one has reason to be a body collector \o/ its not creepy if every one does it right....?

I knew a guy who tried to collect a thousand corpses and put them in his carrier saying:
"If my carrier gets blown up there will be a thousand bodies floating in space, like the entire crew of my ship died."

Now that is hard core RP right there.

You could also say: don't bother with doing lvl 1 and 2 missions; low income, waste of time. You forgot about one thing: for a new player, 4 Armor Plates is a ton of cash.
