New Mission Runner Question

#1 - 2017-04-24 05:24:52 UTC
Howdy yall, I am curious and wondering if anyone here can help with a couple questions. I am Caldari and I am wondering if projectile turrets or missiles will be best for a dedicated mission runner. LOOKING FOR A FRIEND HERE!

Any help would be appreciated on mission running Caldari and where to focus training

Hello and welcome to Eve.

These Uniwiki pages should answer your questions :

Check info on ships to see the bonus that affects it's attributes. That will give you an idea on how to fit them up. Look at various ships before actually buying one and use the Ghost Fitting option in the Fitting window to see if you can use it and the modules before actually spending any ISK.

Hope this helps and please feel free to ask questions. In this game Knowledge is King and Communication is it's Queen.

i would say that if you are going to be with pure caldari for a while then missiles are the best choice

each type of npc is weak to different damage types and with missiles you can always hit that hole

hybrids mean you are only able to deal kinetic/ thermal damage which is not great against all npc

I prefer autocannons/arty for most lv4 pve content. Machariel is probably the #1 mission ship at this point. Fit with AC you can either shield or armor tank it depending on preferences, and fit for a ton of damage and projection. Plus you can hit 1600m/s with an MWD so you can get around the mission pocket easily, or control range/transversal velocity to volley small ships off the field. You can also swap to artillery for missions where you either need to hit stuff at range, or just need to volley a few targets off the field. I have 2 machs in my mission systems as it is faster to swap ships than fits, although early on it is much cheaper to swap fits. Personally I run with auto cannons, an armor tank, mjd, mwd, and then a bunch of gyros and tracking computers.

missiles are the good ole slow and steady method. I started running missions using missiles and they did well by me, but I need something else these days. I'm currently training cruise missiles 5 10 years into the game mostly for the sake of having it and not for a specific purpose, I want to play around with the barghest and try some fits, although that is more of a curiosity than a recommendation. (that said my alt has it and cruise spec 5 as I pure caldari trained him for years)

for low level pve you might want missiles, light/heavy missiles are pretty good for pve, although in low level pve it doesn't matter too much what you use.

Missiles are the simpliest and easiest to use, often with the fewest question marks and ways for RNG to ruin things. Turrets on the other hand can produce crit hits under good circumstances (though they can also make poor hits in bad ones) and apply damage at the same moment the shot is fired, were as missiles must travel to target and cannot make crit hits. Generally for PvE, missiles are often preferred do to the advantages missiles offer over their drawbacks. Turrets still get used a descent amount as well depending largely on whether the ship being used is a gunboat or a missile truck, which actually raises an important point related to your question.

The tough part here is that it's nearly impossible to really recommend one weapon class over the other as there are strong cases for either, including ships, personal experience, even the fact that many of the pros and cons tend to be subjective in value from one person to the other -- some people could care less that "weapon A can do this" while others love the fact that "weapon B can do that". Raw, unanimously accepted forms of efficiency and viability often varies enough from one aspect to another that projectiles win sometimes and missiles do in other times. Unfortunately, it often takes time and patience for each player to figure out what works for them. I and everyone else here in fact, would be lying if any of us could say for sure without question or doubt which weapon works for're the only one that can figure that out, though that will, to reiterate, take time to get sorted out.

Personally, I'd point to missiles do to simplicity, especially if you intend to run shield tanks since the Caldari side of ships often rely on both. If you want armor tank instead, drones could be another beneficial direction to gun for and Gallente ships could be right up your ally. It's really up to you though. All we can do really is offer why we like them and what makes them struggle, and many have already offered some insight before me.

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

the great thing about eve is that there are many ways of doing the same- some ways are better than others but all can have their own benefits.

all weapons and ships have different pros and cons- its up to individual pilots to weigh up each and decide what is best for them

i personally use many different ships and weapon types depending on my mood, what i fancy and what is best for that task

for lv4 missions, when i fancy shield tanking i have a nightmare, a rattlesnake and a machariel so i can deal well with all types of optimal damage. i have a mach and a navy mega for when i armour tank

its a game of choices, so go out and try stuff and see what you like

when i started out, a cruise raven can easily run all lv4 missions with ease. i havent tried myself but i hear that the rokh is not a great mission runner

Really depends on how you want to clear your missions.

For slow, full-clears, you'll probably go for the Raven and its variants, which are predominantly missile-boats, with Torpedoes.

For quick clears (blitzing), you'll either want a Machariel with autocannons or a Barghest with rapid heavy missile launchers, depending on your budget.

Going further than that, you can add Anomic Missions to your plate, but those require smaller and much more specific ships/fits. They aren't really a "Well, what ship can I use to run them if I have missile skills?" situation, and more of a "Use this ship, with these guns, and these skills, or you will just die" deal.

If all you are going to do is run missions-between those two, I'd say missiles. But really, I say Drones above all.

For anything larger than a destroyer you will probably use drones anyway. Using them as a primary weapon is versatile, allows you to use up-sized weapons for your hull (sentries or heavies from a cruiser), and small sized for tackle from a large hull (a BS fighting off frigs).
You can even salvage the field after the mission.
You can drop jam drones in a pinch if a ganker tackles you.
Some missions even have mine-able ore that drones can collect (lol)

Im older in my 40's

then my advice is a character with around 40 mils SP with all round PVE skills, who can fly Caldary (Tengu / Raven / Marauder) and have good missile skills, Guristas (Gila / Rattlesnake) with Drone / Missile skills and Angel (Machariel) with autocannons / arty + drones.

Don't wait 2 years till you get those skills....because it screws up the game. And you miss a lot, when you cant fly anything.

Or at least by a char with exellent core skills (engineering, cybernetics, shields, navigation), this makes life easier...
